• Inspired to fight for homeland
• Leadership of Gen. Robert E. Lee
• Knew the terrain
• Cotton is king! (early reasoning)
• Better soldiers/well-trained officers
• Fought a defensive war (only needed a draw)

North - Weakness

• Had to maintain long lines of
  communication/supplies
• Fighting an offensive war
• Anti-war movement (Copperheads)
• Soldiers not well-trained/disciplined

South - Weaknesses

• 4 out of 9 million people were slaves
• Forming new government while fighting a war
• Leaders made poor decisions
• Few factories
• Creating a Navy and Army
• Some states insisted on their own rights
  instead of supporting the CSA
