TOPICS
  • SEDRIS TECHNOLGY COMPONENTS
  • EDCS
  • ATMOSPHERIC GRID MAPPING

3
SEDRIS Technology Components
  • Data Representation Model (DRM)
  • Provides syntax and structural semantics for
    databases
  • Environmental Data Coding Standard (EDCS)
  • Provides object/thing level semantics
  • Spatial Reference Model (SRM)
  • Robust description of the coordinate systems,
combined with an accurate, efficient, fast
    software implementation
  • SEDRIS Transmittal Format (STF)
  • Platform independent storage and transmission of
    databases
  • Application Programmers Interface (API)
  • Allows ease of access
  • Lowers the barrier-to-entry in software
    development

4
Data Coding Standard
  • Unifies characterizations of environmental
    things
  • Whether individual primitives or structured
    collections
  • Regardless of how represented --
  • Feature or Geometry or Data Table or Model or ...
  • Separates enumerations from Data Representation
    Model
  • Evolve at different rates
  • Allows better leverage of (and coordination with)
    external standards
  • Increased flexibility/extensibility
  • Answers three types of questions
  • 1. What is it?
  • ? SEDRIS Environmental Classification Code (ECC)
  • 2. What are its additional clarifying
    characteristics?
  • ? SEDRIS Environmental Attribute Code (EAC)
  • 3. How does it deviate from normality?
  • ? SEDRIS Environmental State Code (ESC)

5
ECC Classifications (and Features)
1. What is it? building, river/stream, air
warning light, ocean floor
Animal?
Vegetable?
Weather?
Water?
Mineral?
Vehicle?
Structure?
Celestial?
6
EAC Attributes (and Values)
1. What is it? building, river/stream, air
warning light, ocean floor
2. Additional clarifying characteristics? lighth
ouse, 1.5m, red, temperature, rain
Vegetation Type?
Snow
Overhead Clearance?
Building Function?
7
ESC States
1. What is it? building, river/stream, air
warning light, ocean floor
2. Additional clarifying characteristics? lighth
ouse, 1.5m, red, coral
3. How does it deviate from normality? 30
damage, 5.5m, switched off, dead coral
Lit?
Dry, Wet, Icy
Damaged?

Related Data Coding Standards
  • Coordinated with DISA future conceptual models
  • Defense Data Dictionary System (DDDS) / DoD Data
    Model (DDM)
  • USIGS Conceptual Data Model (UCDM)
  • Joint METOC Conceptual Data Model (JMCDM)
  • EDCS is not inconsistent with DDDS/DDM
  • However only as consistent as current data
permits(SEDRIS will evolve in concert with
    evolving data sources)
  • SEDRIS experience will provide MS inputs to DISA
    process

9
Mapping Weather Parameters to EDCS
  • Reviewed ASNE requirements for weather parameters
  • Crosswalk between requirements and EDCS and
    DDDS/JMCDM
  • Compared and reviewed definitions
  • Identified missing EDCS
  • Created a document that summarized all
discrepancies and asked for clarification from
    ASNE
  • Submitted SCRs to add or update EDCS codes

CURRENT STATUS
  • All current required weather parameters have
either been added or are in an SCR to be added
  • Beta version of GRIB to SEDRIS mapping and
    translation program available
  • Mapping document drafted
  • VIS5D viewer has been extended

19
PLANS
  • Update GRIB to SEDRIS to support next release of
    SEDRIS in April
  • Develop a SEDRIS to GRIB converter for METOC
    parameters
  • Improve STF to VIS5D for METOC data
  • DATSAV3 to STF for standard METOC observations
