2AShiwi Elementary School Located approximately
35 miles south of Gallup, Zuni is one of 19
Indian Pueblos in New Mexico. However, Zuni is
unique because it is the only Indian controlled
Public School district, governed by a Native
American majority Board of Education, in the
state and, as a result, has become a national
model for community-based education. Nearly 1500
students are served by the districts five public
schools and the Tribal Head Start program.
Ninety-nine percent (99) of the students are
enrolled members of Native American Tribes.
AShiwi Elementary is one of two public
elementary schools educating the Pre-Kindergarten
through 5th grade children of the Zuni Pueblo.
3 Cultural Expectations Our children must learn to
be successful in both traditional Zuni life and
the dominant Non-Zuni world. Due to the unique
demands of Pueblo life, students are expected to
meet the same standards as students as all other
students in New Mexico when they have additional
requirements from the community. For example at
various times during the school year, a majority
of our students are expected to participate in
traditional dances, which last late in the night
or early morning, and still be in attendance at
school the next day.

12- Instructional Strategies that Assisted in Making
AYP - Adherence to the non-negotiables of Reading
First. - Provided 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading at
all grade levels. - Use of Harcourt-Brace reading series to provide
scope and sequence in basic reading and literacy
skills. - Use of Reading First lesson maps and templates to
guide reading instruction. - Use of state standards and benchmarks to guide
systematic instruction at all grade levels. - Targeted low performing students for additional
interventions in reading. - Use of Silver-Burdett Ginn math series for
students at all grade levels. - Implemented monthly literacy activities for
families. - Sent home progress reports each mid-nine week
period to parents of low performing students. - Analyzed data to guide instruction at monthly
grade level meetings. - Extensive professional development for staff in
reading through Reading First workshops. - Use of the Reading First Walk to Read model for
all third grade students. - Use of EPSS Coordinator to coordinate and monitor
all curriculum areas for staff. - Use of Reading Coach to assist teachers and
educational assistants in complying with Reading
First mandates and modeling of the program. - Use of Reading Interventionist who provided
additional instruction to students identified on
DIBELS as intensive and strategic. - Use of Scott Foresman science series for students
at all grade levels. - High staff morale.
13- How Will We Maintain AYP?
- We will continue using the Instructional
Strategies that guided our school to Make
Adequate Yearly Progress. - We will adjust and modify instructional practices
that have not been effective and enchance those
practices that have proven successful. - We will continue having HIGH EXPECTATIONS for
academic success of all students. -
- We will continue to work as a school team to
achieve personal, school and district goals. - We will work to leave a legacy of success with
students attending Ashiwi Elementary as being
adequately prepared to succeed and transition to
higher levels of learning. - We will maintain the academic growth of fifth
grade by following established instructional
practices already in place.
