3Creating the Design Using Rhythm
What is Rhythm?
- In Music, Rhythm is the beat we feel and hear
when we listen to music.
So, Rhythm is the repetition of a beat.

6Creating the Design Using Rhythm
- Review In Art, what is Rhythm?
- Rhythm is the repetition of an element of art in
a pattern, to make the work seem active. - Three Types of Rhythm
- Regular
- Alternating
- Progressive Rhythm
7Types of Rhythm
Regular Rhythm very simple regular one-beat
rhythm
A visual example of Regular Rhythm would be a
series of identical circles repeated one after
the other

9Types of Rhythm
Alternating Rhythm a regular series of visual
changes
Visual example circle square, circle
square, circle square.

11Types of Rhythm
Progressive Rhythm is a pattern of progressive
changes in a repeated element
Visual example a series of squares, each
slightly larger than another
What is the repeated element?
How is the element changing to make progressive
rhythm?
12Progressive Rhythm
a pattern of progressive changes in a repeated
element
What is the repeated element?
What is the progressive change?
So, what is the pattern or progressive rhythm?

16Balance
- Symetrical Balance
- Asymetrical Balance
- Radial Balance
17Asymmetrical Balance
A type of visual balance in which the two sides
of a composition are different yet balanced. The
two sides are equal without being just the same.
Symmetrical
Asymmetrical

18Asymmetrical Balance
GeorgesSeurat, Sunday Afternoon on the Island Le
Grand Jatte, 1884-6. http//www.artchive.com/artch
ive/s/seurat/jatte.jpg
This is also called informal balance. It
involves placement of objects in a way that will
allow objects of varying visual weight to balance
out each other. Here the larger figures to the
right are balanced by the many smaller figures to
the left. There is also balance of shadow and
light.
19Progressive Rhythm
A pattern or rhythm that develops step by step
While this is a nice drawing, it doesnt use
asymmetrical balance nor progressive rhythm YET.
Drawing by Nick Bauer
20Progressive Rhythm
Suggestions First, bring person higher toward
top left hand corner.
Doing this would change the balance toward an
asymmetrical design.
21Progressive Rhythm
Suggestions Next, use the soccer ball to show a
progression
progression in size from smaller to larger.
Nicks drawing altered to demonstrate
asymmetrical balance progressive rhythm
22Progressive Rhythm
Suggestions Or, still using the soccer ball
to show progression
progression in color from dull to bright.
