Assessment of development

National Service Frameworkfor Children, Young
People and Maternity Services
  • NSF advocates a shift within services being
designed and around needs of children-child
centred and looking at the whole child, not just
the illness or problem, but rather the best way
to pick any problem up early, take preventative
action and ensure children have the best possible
chance to realise their full potential 10 year
    plan
  • National standards for childrens health and
social care , which promote high quality, women
and child-centred services and personalised care
that meets the needs of parents, children and
    their families

  • Our approach to surveillance for developmental
problems will be listening to the parents report
of the childs progress, coupled with observation
of the child at each contact, rather than of
    routine specific developmental examination.
  • Parental questioning and observation of the child
    to assess developmental normality should
consciously focus on each of the 4 key areas of
    development
  • Gross Motor
  • Fine Motor/Manipulation (including vision)
  • Speech and Language (including hearing)
  • Social
  • and should aim to assess the quality of
performance in these areas, as well as the
    quantitative level of attainment.

  • Easy and fun test to use takes about 30 mins
  • Usually administered by health visitor
