What is a Master Reading Teacher?
  • The intent of the MRT program is to increase the
    reading ability of Texas school children,
    particularly those on identified high-need
    campuses, by encouraging teachers to become
    certified as master reading teachers. During the
    course of regular school days, the MRT teaches
    students and mentors fellow teachers regarding
    student reading problems. Districts assign an MRT
    to perform these duties on an identified
    high-need campus and schedule the MRTs classes
    and mentoring activities in conformance with the
    definitions set forth in the Commissioners Rules.

ADMISSIONS
  • Hold a valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Have 3 years teaching experience
  • Submit copies of PDAS for past three years
    showing proficient or exceeds in all domains
  • Submit copies of student performance on the TAKS,
    Stanford, Apprenda and TPRI/Tejas Lee for the
    past three years
  • Submit 3 letters of recommendation from
    individuals familiar with candidates experience
    in teaching reading. One must be from the
    candidates principal or supervisor.

  • Demonstration of oral skills through a successful
    interview.
  • Demonstration of written skills through
    successful response to essay questions
  • Copy of Reading Specialist certification, if
    applicable
  • Completed application

Curriculum
  • 6 hours of coursework at the University of
    St.Thomas
  • Monthly networking sessions
  • Summer Reading Institute
  • Portfolio case studies
  • Observations by ACP and Reading Department Staff

Certified Reading Specialist Curriculum
  • If an educator holds a Reading Specialist
    certificate, then he/she must satisfactorily
    complete an MRT preparation program but is not
    required to take the MRT certification
    examination.

  • HISD ACP Supervisor
  • Reading Department staff member

Stipend???
  • In order to qualify for a stipend, a teacher
    must
  • hold current MRT certification
  • be designated by the campus principal to fill an
    MRT slot on a TEA eligible high-need campus
  • teach reading on the identified high-need campus
  • mentor fellow teachers on that campus.

How Do I Apply
  • Applications are available on the ACP website.
  • Applications for the 2007-2008 school year cohort
    are due by April 1, 2007.
  • Interviews will be scheduled for late April 2007.

  • Applications, money order for 75 application
    fee, copies of PDAS, student performance
    information and reference letters should be sent
