History and Correct Use
- Chopsticks play an important role in Japanese
food culture, and are called Hashi. They also
originated from China, and spread to Vietnam,
Korea and Japan in A.D 500. In Japan, chopsticks
were originally used only for religious
ceremonies, and originally looked like tweezers.
They were made from one piece of bamboo that was
connected by the top. When the 10th Century
arrived, chopsticks were being made into two
separate pieces. In tradition, chopsticks have
been made from many different materials, but
bamboo seems to be the most popular one due to
its availability, inextensibility, resistance to
heat and dont smell or have a flavour. - Here is a quick list of bad manners
- Waving chopsticks above food dishes. Sticking
chopsticks into food instead of picking them up.
Picking up a cup/bowl with the hand that is
holding your chopsticks. Sucking chopsticks.
Sticking chopsticks vertically into a bowl of
rice. Passing food from your chopsticks to
somebody else's chopsticks.

Different kinds of Chopsticks
- There are many different kinds of chopsticks, and
they are also made with different materials.
These kinds include- bamboo or wooden,
disposable, plastic, stainless steel and training
chopsticks. - Bamboo and wood are the most common materials in
making chopsticks. Sometimes different wood tones
are combined to make elegant chopsticks, other
times special symbols or animal figures are
carved onto them. - Disposable chopsticks are usually made from wood
or bamboo and are see as an environmental issue
because of how much wood is wasted. - Plastic chopsticks are more environmentally
friendly because they can be washed and reused.
They are, of course, strong and they last a long
time.

How to Correctly hold Chopsticks
First, hold the upper (first) chopstick as if
you were holding a pencil, about 1/3 of the way
from the top.
Next, put the 2nd chopstick against your ring
finger, holding it with the base of your thumb.
It should be facing the same way as the 1st
chopstick.
Move the top chopstick with your thumb, index,
and middle fingers. Grab food with the tip of the
chopsticks.
