- Requires the installation and maintenance of
erosion control devices to prevent soil discharge
to protected natural resources or beyond the
project site

- Alteration within 75 feet of a resource
- Bulldozing, dredging, removing or displacing
soils, sand, vegetation and other materials - Placing fill in a resource
- Draining or dewatering a resource
- Construction, repair, or alteration of any
permanent structure in a resource

marsh vegetation - Containing peatlands
- In the 100-year floodplain
- Within 25 of a river, stream or brook
- Containing S1 or S2 natural community
- Containing sign. wildlife habitat
9EXEMPTIONS
- ALTERATIONS less than 4300 SQ FT (since 1995) in
certain wetland types and locations - FOREST MANAGEMENT ACTIVITY in forested freshwater
wetlands only
10Forested WetlandsA forested wetland is a wetland
dominated by woody vegetation 6 meters tall or
taller
11EXEMPTION WETLANDS
- If activity is single complete project and not
in another protected natural resource, up to
4,300 sq. ft. alteration allowed if - Area is gt25 feet from other protected resources
- Area is not in SLZ or the area subject to zoning
- Wetland does not contain 20,000 sq. ft. .
- Wetland does not contain peatland
- Activity is not in a significant wildlife habitat
12WETLAND PERMITTING
- TIER 1 Alt. up to 15,000 sq. ft.
- TIER 2 Alt. between 15,000 sq. ft. and 1 acre
- TIER 3 (or FULL NRPA) Alt. of Wetlands of
Special Significance and alt. over 1 acre

Ordinances
- Requires all organized towns in Maine to have a
shoreland zoning ordinance that meets state
minimum guidelines -
- Towns may adopt an ordinance that is more
stringent than the state minimum requirements
