1
Science Numbers Review
  • Metric System

2
Metric System Introduction
  • Aka System International (SI units)
  • Based on powers of ten
  • Language of science

3
Length
  • Length is the distance between two points
  • The SI base unit is meter (m)
  • Measure length with meter sticks

4
Mass
  • Mass is the amount of matter that an object takes
    up
  • The SI unit for mass is gram (g)
  • Mass versus Weight
  • - mass (amount of matter) is constant
  • - weight (force of gravity) is not constant
  • Measure mass with scales and triple beam balances

5
Volume
  • Volume is the amount of space in an object
  • SI unit for solids is cubiccm3 or liquids is
    liter
  • Volume of a box L X W X H

Ex. Length 4cm Width 2cm Height
2cm What is the volume?
6
Water Displacement
  • Use this method to find the volume of objects
    that are not boxed shape
  • Place water in cylinder and watch the change in
    water level

7
Graduated Cylinders
  • Volume of a liquid is found using a graduated
    cylinder
  • Liquids form curved surface when poured
  • To correctly read the volume, read the bottom of
    the curve called the meniscus

8
Density
  • Density is the amount of matter (mass) compared
to the amount of space (volume) the object
    occupies
  • Density is mass divided by volume
  • D Mass/ Volume
  • For example
  • - Mass is 5g
  • - Volume is 10ml
  • - D ??????

9
Float or sink?
  • More dense an object is the more matter it has in
    it
  • Less dense an object is the less matter it has in
    it

10
Temperature
  • SI unit is degrees Celsius
  • Measured using a thermometer

11
Review Metric Units
  • -Length
  • -Volume
  • -Mass
  • -Temperature

12
Metric Prefixes
  • Regardless of the unit, the entire system uses
    same prefix
  • Common prefixes are
  • - kilo 1000
  • - centi 1/100th
  • - milli 1/1000th

13
Metric Stairs for Conversions
14
Metric Practice
  1. 54.2 cm ____________m
  2. 132.6cl _____________ Hl
  3. 8.2 kg _____________g
  4. 45.23g _____________ mg

15
Metric Practice
  1. 54.2 cm .542 m
  2. 132.6cl .01326 Hl
  3. 8.2 kg 8200 g
  4. 45.23g 45230 mg

16
Graphing
  • Labels (title, x axis, y axis, units)
  • Smooth lines connect the dots
  • Accuracy
  • Dependent Variable on the y axis
  • Independent Variable on the x axis
