Title: Metric Measurements

1
Metric Measurements
2
Scientific Measures
  • All measurements in the class will use the metric
    system
  • The metric system is the basis for the
    International System of Units (SI)
  • This is the international standard for scientific
    measures
  • Based on multiples of 10 for easy conversion on
    one measure to another

3
Metric System (SI) Units
4
Metric prefixes
5
Metric Conversions
  • Converting one metric measure to another involves
multiplying or dividing by the proper power of 10
  • When going from smaller to larger measures, the
    number of units will decrease.
  • i.e. 100 cm in 1m
  • When going from larger to smaller measures, the
    number of units will increase.
  • i.e. 1km contains 1000m

6
Example Problem 1
  • Q How many decimeters are in one meter?

7
Example Problem 1
  • Q How many decimeters are in one meter?
  • A Since meter has no prefix it equals 1
  • Going from larger measure to smaller measure
  • meter 1
  • deci 10-1 0.1
  • 1m/0.1dm10
  • There are 10dm in 1m

8
Example Problem 2
  • Q How many kilometers are in one centimeter?

9
Example Problem 2
  • Q How many kilometers are in one centimeter?
  • A Going from smaller measure to larger measure
  • kilo 103 1000
  • centi 10-2 0.01
  • first convert cm to m
  • 1cm0.01m (1 one hundredth of a meter)
  • then convert m to km
  • 0.01m 1km/1000m

Example Problem 2
  • Q How many kilometers are in one centimeter?
  • A Going from smaller measure to larger measure
  • kilo 103 1000
  • centi 10-2 0.01
  • first convert cm to m
  • 1cm0.01m (1 one hundredth of a meter)
  • then convert m to km
  • 0.01m 1km/1000m 0.00001km
  • There are 0.00001km in one cm

11
Example Problem 3
  • Q How many milliliters are in one dekaliter?

12
Example Problem 3
  • Q How many milliliters are in one dekaliter?
  • A Going from larger measure to smaller measure
  • milli 10-3 0.001
  • deka 10 10
  • first convert dal to l
  • 1dal10l
  • then convert l to ml
  • 10l 1000ml/1l

Example Problem 3
  • Q How many milliliters are in one dekaliter?
  • A Going from larger measure to smaller measure
  • milli 10-3 0.001
  • deka 10 10
  • first convert dal to l
  • 1dal10l
  • then convert l to ml
  • 10l 1000ml/1l 10000ml
  • There are 10,000ml in one dal.
