Welcome Back!!!

2
NC Mathematics Standard Course of Study
  • Be sure to get your grade level SCoS card today
and take some time to become familiar with each
strand. Your Pacing and Alignment Guide will
    help you tremendously.

3
Please remember to use your Chatham County
Schools 3-5 Mathematics Pacing Alignment Guides
  • These guides were designed by Chatham County 3-5
Teachers and ensure that the North Carolina
Mathematics Standard Course of Study is covered
    in your classroom.

4
3-5 Mathematics Pacing Alignment Guides
  • These guides include curriculum maps for each
nine weeks, teacher resources for every nine
weeks, and all 3-5 published DPI resources
    aligned with our curriculum maps.
  • Please take advantage of this amazing resource!

5
Chatham County Schools Math Quarterly Assessments
  • Mark the dates on your calendar now.
  • 1st Quarter October 25-26
  • 2nd Quarter January 16-17

6
North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests
  • Mark your calendar now.
  • EOG Tests will be May 19th to May 23rd.

7
Math Profiles
  • 3-5 Teachers should complete a Math Profile for
EVERY student. Math Profile Folders list the
math objectives of the Standard Course of Study
and provide teachers a way to document student
    progress.

8
Math Profiles
  • Teachers should include copies of all required
    Chatham County Schools Math Quarterly
Assessments, EOG results, plus student work
samples deemed appropriate by the teacher.
  • Please see hand-out for more details of what to
    include.

9
Math Profiles
  • The purpose of the 3-5 Math Profile is to inform
teachers of student progress and to guide
    instruction.
  • Teachers should also maintain parent
communication every nine weeks and mid-nine
weeks. Be sure to document parent communication
    in your Math Profile Folders.

10
Math Profiles
  • Be sure to also maintain a documented record of
remediation (PEP) for students performing below
    grade level.
  • Spencer Register will elaborate on appropriate
    strategies to include.

11
Best Practices to Implement this Year
  • Take the time to pre-assess students before each
unit. Dont make this hard, we are looking for a
snapshot of what students already know and do not
    know.
  • Spencer Register will elaborate today.

12
Best Practices to Implement this Year
  • Take the time to post-assess after each unit.
  • Make a habit of using alternative styles of
assessing in addition to traditional pencil-paper
    assessments.

13
Stay Informed
  • Write to Donna Thomas at dthomas_at_dpi.state.nc.us
to get placed on the K-5 Elementary Mathematics
    List Serve.

14
Annual State Math Conference
  • The 37th Annual State Mathematics (NCCTM)
Conference will be held on October 11-12 at the
Joseph K. Koury Convention Center Sheraton Four
    Seasons in Greensboro.

15
Piedmont Triad Education Consortium
  • Mathematics Beyond Arithmetic Great Interactive
Strategies for Teachers of Grades 3-5 will be
held on October 17th at PTEC. Kim Sutton is an
awesome presenter and well worth your time!!!

16
Math Manipulative Kits
  • Math Manipulative Kits can be found in every
    school Media Center.
  • Please take the time to find and use these kits
whenever possible. Students learn best by doing
and playing with mathematics not by worksheet
    after worksheet.

Best Wishes for a Wonderful 2007-2008 School
