What is Frame Relay

• Frame Relay is a connection-oriented protocol
  that employs virtual link.
• It requires an establishing of a connection
  before two nodes can communicate.

Congestion Control in FR Network

• Admission Control
• Committed Information Rate CIR.
• Committed Burst Size BC.
• Excess Burst Size BE.

• Addressing the Congestion
• Informing the End nodes that network experiences
  congestion.
• Consequently, End nodes slows its rate of
  transmission.
• This can be done using two mechanisms

• Forward-explicit congestion notification (FECN).
• Backward-explicit congestion notification
  (BECN).
• Note that Frame doesn't correct the errors.
  It depends on higher protocols to that. For this
  reason its fast and preferable.
