- South Carolinas population is increasing faster
than national average, especially along coast. - Coastal residents make up one fourth of our
statewide population. - Historically South Carolina has experienced
destructive hurricanes to include the Sea Island
Hurricane of 1893 and more the more recent
Hurricane Hugo which made land fall in September
1989.
3Statewide Building Code
- 1997 the SC General Assembly passed legislation
calling for the adoption of a statewide building
code. - The legislation also created the Loss Mitigation
Grant and Training Grant Program which provided
start-up dollars to local jurisdictions for the
development of code programs and for the training
of code enforcement officers. - This past July, we implemented the 2006 code.

retrofit their primary residence.

catastrophic damages caused by high winds
associated with hurricanes.
- Assists homeowners in understanding what
mitigation is and how it can help protect their
property.
- Improves the existing housing stock in coastal
South Carolina. - Encourages availability and affordability of
homeowners insurance.

7Where are we today?

- 867 grants awarded totaling approximately 4.1
million. An average of 2 homes are strengthened
per day. - Hosted a Hurricane Mitigation Expo and Training
Session in Charleston this past August. Event
offered public outreach as well as training with
approved CE credit for insurance agents,
realtors, floodplain managers, code enforcement
officers and contractors. - Created partnerships and receive support from
public and private entities to include the South
Carolina Wind and Hail Underwriting Association,
National Flood Insurance Program, Industry
Associations, state and local building code
enforcement divisions, emergency management
agencies and local homeowner associations and
consumer groups.
