Title: Hike Across Canada

1
Hike Across Newfoundland Labrador
2
Port aux Basques
  • Welcome to Port aux Basques, ocean Gateway to
Newfoundland and Labrador! Large ferries make
daily crossings from Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Located just a stones throw away is the Codroy
Valley which contains some of the most fertile
    agricultural land in Newfoundland.
  • Lets pick some bakeapples!

3
The Wreckhouse
  • Local people claim that a place just outside of
Port aux Basques, the Wreckhouse, is the second
windiest place in the world. Winds have been
known to gust in excess of 200 km/ hour. The
Newfie Bullet, a Newfoundland train, often had to
stop here and wait for winds to die down.
  • Lets go for a ride on the Newfie Bullet!

4
  • During World War 2, Harmon Field became the
largest American air force base outside the
United States and a major refueling stop for
aircraft en route to Europe. Every second
summer, Stephenville hosts an air show to
celebrate the history of the Harmon Air Force
Base operated by the U.S. Military from 1941 to
    1966.
  • Lets fly a plane over Stephenville!

5
Corner Brook/ Marble Mountain
  • Located just outside of Corner Brook, Marble
Mountain features some of the best skiing east of
the Rockies. With an average annual snowfall of
16 feet, Marble is the place to be
  • for amazing skiing and winter adventures.
  • Lets ski down Marble Mountain!

6
Gros Morne
  • Within Gros Morne National Park are mountains,
fjords, volcanic rock, boreal forests, arctic
barrens, and an unusual outcropping of rock
called the Tablelands. The dramatic landscape has
earned Gros Morne National Park a UNESCO World
    Heritage Site designation.
  • Lets climb Gros Morne Mountain!

7
Port aux Choix
  • Port au Choix is a National Historic Site with
one of the richest archeological finds in North
America! Burial sites uncovered in the 1960's
70's provide evidence of early settlers - from
the Maritime Archaic Indians to the Groswater and
    Dorset Palaeoeskimos.
  • Lets dig for artifacts!

8
LAnse aux Meadows
  • In 1960, the remains of a Norse village were
discovered here by Helge and Anne Ingstad. The
site is notable for possible connections with the
attempted colony of Vinland by Leif Ericson in
1003. LAnse aux Meadows is the only known
Viking site in North America outside of Greenland
and was named a World Heritage site in 1978.
  • A Polar Bear was seen here
  • in April Run!

9
Red Bay
  • Right and bowhead whales attracted whalers from
the Basque region of Spain and France to coastal
Labrador during the 16th century. Whale oil was
a valuable product for lamp fuel, paints, and
lubricants in European markets. Several Basque
whaling ships were discovered in Red Bay Harbour
    and have been preserved
    at the National Historic Site
    there.
  • Lets go kayaking in Red Bay!

10
Churchill Falls
  • Since 1970, the waters of the Churchill River in
the Big Land of Labrador have been diverted into
the nearby Churchill Falls hydroelectric power
station. This power station has the second
    largest hydroelectric generating capacity in
    North America.
  • Lets go fishing in Churchill River!

11
Grand Falls- Windsor
  • The Beothuk Indians lived here for almost 2000
    years.
  • They fished in the Exploits River and travelled
    inland
  • during the winter in search of caribou. They
    eventually
  • died out because of disease and conflicts with
    Europeans.
  • Their history is told in the Mary March Museum in
    Grand Falls.
  • Lets go skating on the Exploits River!

12
Gander
  • During World War 2, Gander was a strategic post
for the Royal Air Force Air Ferry
Command, with nearly 20,000 fighters and
bombers stopping at Gander en route to Europe.
    In
2008, Gander celebrated its 50th anniversary as a
town. To celebrate, Great Big Sea
    played at their birthday bash.
  • Lets dance to music of Great Big Sea!

13
Saint-Pierre and Miquelon
  • The British and French fought for hundreds of
years over these islands but the treaty of 1763
returned the islands back to France once and for
all. For the next two hundred years, the main
    industry was the cod fishery.
  • Lets go cod jigging off Saint-Pierre!

14
St. Johns
  • The oldest continuing sporting event in North
America is the St. Johns Regatta. Dozens of
teams row against one another in front of 50,000
spectators each year. This is a major focus of
summer activities in the St. John's area.
  • Lets row in the championship race!

15
