What the U.S.S. Maine was

• Rated at the time as a battleship, the Maine
  actually was an armored (heavy) cruiser, also
  known as a second-class battleship.

Why The U.S.S. Maine Was Sent

• To protect American interests in Cuba.
• this action was a blatant effort to change
  Spanish colonial policies.

What Happened

• On the night of 15 February, the Maine blew up in
  Havana Harbor.
• On 28 March a naval court of inquiry found that
  the explosion had resulted from an external mine.

What it all led to.

• On April 11th the U.S. declared war against
  Spain.
