The Early Years
  • William Travis was born on Aug. 9, 1809 in South
    Carolina.
  • When he was nineteen he married a girl named
    Roseanna Cato
  • When Travis was only twenty years old he and his
    wife had a son named Charles Edward Travis.
  • He came to Texas in early 1831. he practiced law
    first in Anahuac then at San Felipe.

Travis in the War
  • Travis was one of the first to join the army when
    times became rough.
  • Travis was one of the hundreds who came to the
    aid of the battle of Gonzales although he did not
    get there soon enough to fight.
  • On June 29, 1835 he raised a regiment of 25
    volunteers and captured Captain Antonio Tenorio
    at Anahuac.

The Rise of the Alamo
  • Travis first entered the Alamo with only 40 men
    (Jim Bowie commanded the volunteers)
  • Travis commanded only the regulars until Bowie
    was struck with Typhoid and was bedridden. Travis
    then took full command of the defenders at the
    Alamo.

The Plea for Help
  • On February 24, 1836 Travis wrote a letter to the
    army officials in Gonzales and other Texas
    cities.
  • He was trying to raise reinforcements to help
    defend the Alamo.
  • No one would answer the call.

The Seizure of the Alamo
  • Santa Anna's men were ready and stormed the Alamo
    on the dawn of March 6, 1836.
  • All of the defenders were killed.

The cost of the Alamo
  • The defenders of the Alamo all died under a
    battle with over 10,000 Mexican troops. Although
    they lost they fought proudly for their fellow
    Texans to be free.
  • They were proud to serve!

Travis Death
  • William Barret Travis died on the morning of
    March 6, 1836 defending the Alamo. He was one of
    the first to die in that fortress. Yet he died
    proudly, defending the rights that every man
    should have. His main cause of his actions was
    for freedom. He wanted his son and all of the
    citizens of Texas to be free. He actually
    convinced more than 180 men to believe what he
    believed.
  • He stood up for the freedom of innocents and died
    for that freedom.

Afterward
  • The battle of San Jacinto ended the Texas
    revolution. The Alamos defenders were remembered
    in this battle cry Remember the Alamo.
