Title: An Integrated Telerehabilitation Infrastructure to Support Speechlanguage Therapy

1
An Integrated Telerehabilitation Infrastructure
to Support Speech-language Therapy
  • 2007 ATA Conference, Nashville
  • Andi Saptono, MS ans38_at_pitt.edu
  • Bambang Parmanto, PhD parmanto_at_pitt.edu
  • University of Pittsburgh

2
Background
  • Telerehab has potential to deliver
    speech-language therapy to rural areas,
especially areas that lack specialized services
  • Current systems composed mostly of high-end,
    proprietary technology modules
  • Introduces two challenges
  • lack of availability (cost)
  • lack of individual therapy personalization support

3
Opportunity Converting Challenges Into Innovation
  • Internet technology offer low-cost solution to
    availability readily available equipments are
sufficient to support online assessment of motor
    speech disorders in adults
  • Personal health record approach allows a design
    capable of delivering personalized therapy.

4
Presenting Approach Telerehabilitation to
Supporting Virtual Cosmobot
  • Virtual Cosmobot a computer-based application
    designed to enhance children's communication
    function
  • Telerehab protocol requires two types of
    communication channel
  • active, real-time communication channel
    substitute for onsite monitoring
  • passive, store-and-forward communication channel
    evaluate child's progress and personalize
    individual goals and plans

5
Methods Developing the Infrastructure
  • Follows method to design and develop information
    system
  • Identify system requirements
  • Design of the system
  • Weave technology into cohesive system
  • Develop interface layers
  • Deploy system and conduct usability study for
    refinements

6
1st Phase Requirements
  • System requirements list
  • Allow therapist to personalize goals and plans
    for each child
  • Allow therapist set goals of each therapy session
    remotely
  • Administer therapy session at home setting
  • Track of the therapy progress

7
2nd Phase Technologies (1/2)
  • Database technology
  • store multimodal health information
  • utilize Microsoft SQL Server
  • Video conference
  • provide active communication channel over
    internet
  • utilize ConferenceXP
  • Point-to-point data transfer module
  • transfer local data to remote therapist
  • in-house developed apps, XML-based

8
2nd Phase Technologies (2/2)
  • Internet portal technology
  • provide user interface to the data
  • provide passive communication channel
  • utilize Microsoft Sharepoint
  • PHR technology
  • provide personalized access to data
  • utilize in-house MyHealthBits

9
2nd Phase Result System Design
10
3rd and 4th Phase Cohesive System
  • Consist of four main components
  • 1. Multimodal database
  • 2. Data transfer application
  • 3. Online portal -therapist side
  • 4. Online portal -parents side (ongoing
    development)
  • Online portal is used as interface layer to the
    system

Summary
  • Provide a way for the therapist to track
    telerehab progress remotely
  • Personalized information provides therapist with
more complete information about the client
  • Support telerehab through multiple communication
    channel
  • Infrastructure can be expanded with minimal cost
