  • Your Skin serves as a protective covering against

  • Contains nerve endings that give you information
    about temperature and touch.

Vitamin D Formation
  • Skin uses the suns ultraviolet rays to produce
    small amount of Vitamin D.
  • Builds bones and teeth.
  • Controls moods.

Temperature Control
  • Regulating body temperature.
  • Blood vessels in your skin help retain or release
    heat.
  • Perspiration cools your body.
  • Cold pores close.

  • 1st line of defense against germs and injury.
  • Protects organs of the body.

Parts of the Skin
  • 2 main layers ( epidermis dermis)
  • Epidermis- outer layer of skin. New cells are
    always replacing old cells.
  • Melanin- Substance that gives skin its color.
  • Pores- tiny openings in the skin. (oil glands
    keep skin soft.
  • Dermis-inner layer that contains blood vessels,
    nerve endings, and hair follicles.
  • Under the dermis is a layer of fat tissue.
    (Insulator).

Caring for the skin
  • Keep Clean ( early teens sweat glands become
    more active) (bacteria sweat stink) bath and
    shower daily.
  • Take care of yourself Eat a healthful diet. Less
    high fat foods.
  • Guard against the sun Ultraviolet rays can
    damage skin and increase risk of getting skin
    cancer. Sunscreen or block 15 SPF or higher.

ACNE
  • Most Teens are affected ( everyone is different)
  • Active oil glands cause pores to become clogged.
  • Usually affects the face, neck, back and
    shoulders.

Fighting ACNE
  • Gently wash affected area at least twice daily.
  • Avoid touching, picking or rubbing affected area.
  • Dont apply heavy make-ups/creams
  • Dermatologist skin doctor.

Healthy Hair
  • One of the 1st features that people notice.
  • Hair color comes from melanin same as skin.
  • Shape of hair comes from heredity.

Caring for Your Hair
  • Dandruff flaking of the outer layer of dead skin
    cells on the scalp.
  • Head Lice Parasitic insects that live in the
    hair and cause itching. Easy to catch from
    people. Dont share hats, combs, brushes.
