Title- Never Tamed
  • Character Bill Woods, cattle grazier out in
    Western Queensland
  • August- 5 years into drought
  • Describe the land
  • Describe him as a hardy survivor
  • Bill begins the planning to draft the remaining
    stud cattle for market- last of his breeding
    stock- closing up the property
  • The sky darkens as his mood darkens
  • He reflects on the land and its demands
  • Suddenly there is the rumble of thunder
  • He dismisses it he has heard this so often with
    no result

  • He squinted against the glare and sighed. He
    told himself there was no point checking the sky
    again there was just the unending blue
    stretched to the horizon. Wearily, Bill Woods
    turned on his heel and went back inside. He no
    longer enjoyed the views from his verandah all
    that could be seen now was field after field of
    dull red earth no grass, no food for the
    cattle. Not even enough fodder for the remaining
    fifty stud herd.
  • An observer would have noted the slump of his
    shoulders, the thinning gray hair and the weary
    tread. The drought was taking its toll on
    people, too. Five years this August ,since there
    had been effective rain, and all were suffering.
    Bill sighed again once this had been a land of
    plenty. He recalled the galleries of pink galahs
    after the rains, the.
