History
  • DeLoreon Motor Company (DMC) was set up in by
John DeLoreon in Detroit, Michigan on October
    24th 1975.
  • He looked to set up the first factory in a
country where unemployment was particularly high.
One candidate was in the Republic of Ireland, but
the then Minister for Industry and Commerce, Des
OMalley, rejected the prospect of the motor
company being set up in there.
  • The British was very keen on creating jobs in
Northern Ireland to reduce sectarian violence by
    reducing unemployment .
  • Thus DeLoreon Motor Company was founded in
    Belfast, Northern Ireland.
  • The construction of the 6-building, 660,000
square foot manufacturing plant began in 1978.
  • It was completed 16 months later.

DeLorean DMC-12
  • The DeLorean DMC-12 is a sports car that was
manufactured by the DeLorean Motor Company for
the American market in 1981 and 1982 in Northern
    Ireland.
  • It is most commonly known simply as the DeLorean,
as it was the only model ever produced by the
    company.
  • The first prototype appeared in March 1976, and
production officially began in 1981 with the
first DMC-12 rolling off the production line
    January 21.
  • During its production, several features of the
car were changed, such as the hood style, wheels
    and interior.
  • Approximately 9,000 DMC-12s were made before
    production stopped in late 1982.
  • Today, about 6,500 DeLorean Motor Cars are
    believed to still exist.

4
Interesting facts
  • The DMC-12 has a number of unusual
  • construction details which include
  • Gull wing doors
  • Unpainted stainless steel body
  • A rear mounted engine

5
Performance
  • John DeLorean had originally envisioned that the
    car would produce somewhere around
200 horsepower, but eventually settled on a
170 horsepower output for the engine.
  • However this still aloud it to do 0-60mph in just
8.8 seconds respectably for the early 80s.
  • But the real down point was that it could only
    top about 130mph.

6
Back To The Future
  • The DMC-12 was featured and mentioned in many
films and on television, most notably as a time
machine in the movie Back To The Farture.
  • Six DMC-12s were co-opted for use in the making
    of the films.
  • For the second and third films, producers
replaced the underpowered stock engines in their
production cars with bigger, more powerful
    Porsche engines.
