1The geographical dimension of the Population
Census and its contribution to the analysis of
migration Werner Haug Swiss Federal Statistical
Office
2Migration and territorial development
Migration is linked to a number of socio-economic
and territorial factors like agricultural and
industrial employment, educational level,
urban-rural differentiations, infrastructure etc.
Altitude and remoteness play a particular role
in Central Asian countries where a large part of
the population lives in mountainous and semi-arid
areas.
3The contribution of Population Censuses
- Population Censuses are a unique occasion to
identify the regional patterns of migration in
connection with the specific territorial make up
of a country and related ecological and cultural
differences.
4Preconditions and tools
- Digitizing of internal and external borders
- Coding of administrative units
- Tracking of territorial changes since the last
Census - Definition of urban and rural areas
- Creation of a harmonised database from different
Censuses - Creation of an altitude and remoteness database
(or other ecological indicators) - Preparation of thematic maps by oblast, rayon,
communes and villages - Modelling of migration flows
