The Audition
  • An audition is like an interview in that it gives
    you
  • you a chance to meet the person
  • doing the hiring
  • leave an impression of yourself
  • show a sample of your work and what
  • you can do

Two Types of Auditions
  • The actor performs two contrasting monologues
  • The actor reads from the actual script
  • Generally there are two types of auditions.
    However, sometimes the people casting the show
    may just ask you to read something/anything.
    This is just to see how well you read. Then at
    the callbacks they have you do one of the above.

Preparing for the Audition
  • Know the time and location of the audition
  • Get driving directions, bring a map, etc.
  • Read the play in advance
  • Make sure your resume is up to date
  • Have at least two monologues prepared

  • Whats the purpose of performing two monologues
    at an audition?

To show the range of your acting abilities

Choosing Your Monologue
  • Find a character that interests or intrigues you
  • Try to find a character that is within your age
    range 2 or 3 years younger and no more than 10
    years older.
  • Choose a segment that can stand alone.
  • Find a segment that presents a variety of
    emotions and a climactic moment to grab their
    attention.
  • Look for an unusual monologue that has not been
    done very often.

Cold Readings
  • When you arrive at the audition the script is
    handed to you
  • Ask permission to read the material to yourself
    first, before reading aloud
  • Try to determine your characters objective
  • When auditioning
  • 1. Dont bury your face in the script
  • 2. Concentrate on your characters objective
  • 3. Interact with other characters in the scene

Audition Etiquette
  • Make sure you aer better than on time try to
    arrive 15 minutes early
  • Bring a pen or pencil to fill out the audition
    forms
  • Remember that you are being evaluated from the
    moment you enter the audition area.
  • Be confident, courteous, relaxed, and pleasant

More Etiquette
  • Say your name clearly and positively for the
    auditors
  • If there is only one light source, ask if the
    auditors can see you.
  • If not move into the light!
  • Listen carefully to any instructions that you may
    be given.
  • This is important information, which you should
    try your best to incorporate

Good Advice
  • Dont make apologies for yourself
  • Dont ask inappropriate questions after an
    audition, such as Did you like me? or When do
    you think youll make a decision about the
    casting?
  • Dont limit your thinking and precast yourself
    for any one particular role.
  • Be willing to accept any role offered you!
