no charge (!) for access to NTTs IPv6 network
  • motivation already lot of demand for IPv6 in
Japan customers also ask for IPv6-connectivity
    in Europe

system) is on the way (IPv6 and ATM)

5
Highlights of the conference 3/7

    Deutsche Telekom
  • outlined DTAGs interest in IPv6
  • e.g. reduction of operations costs with
    autoconfiguration function
  • e-commerce apps end-to-end network security in
    IPv6

6
Highlights of the conference 4/7
  • Presenter Ivano Guardini, Paolo Fasani from
    CSELT
  • demo IPv6-connectivity by using tunnel-broker
    software
  • plugged into existing IPv4-connectivity
  • established IPv6-connection from the conference

7
Highlights of the conference 5/7
  • Membership of the IPv6 Forum is still growing
  • Matt Holdrege (Lucent, chair of the IETF NAT wg)
Lucent is joining the IPv6 Forum as member 70.

8
Highlights of the conference 6/7
  • Vendors and ISPs are still moving forward to the
    implementation of IPv6-service
  • Workstation vendors (Sun, Compaq (Digital)) have
implemented/will implement IPv6 in new OS
    versions
  • Router vendors some have implemented already
(e.g. Telebit), some keep on announcing the
implementation (e.g. Cisco intends to begin
shipment of IPv6 capable routers in the second
half of 2000., Cisco is fully committed to
    IPv6. Axel Clauberg, Cisco)
  • Microsoft IPv6 not in Windows 2000
  • KAME Project has been prolongued till 03/2002
    ...

9
KAME-Project
  • We are glad to announce the extension of the term
of the KAME project to March 2002. The KAME
project originally planned to close ist
activities in March 2000. Since the next two
years are very important for deployment of IPv6
and the responsibility of the KAME project has
become larger, we have negotiated the sponsor
companies of the KAME project for the extension
and reached consensus. For the next two years,
the KAME project will continue the current coding
activities. We will also concentrate on the
deployment of IPv6.// The KAME project

10
Highlights of the conference 7/7
  • Presenter Cindy Jung, 3Com
  • presentation on 6over4, transition mechanism
    from IPv4 to IPv6
  • Support for IPv6 in the USA now also increases
  • a number of US-based companies have joined
together to organize the next IPv6 conference in
    the USA on ...

11
Next conferences
  • 13.-15.03.2000 Global IPv6 Summit in Telluride,
    Colorado, USA
  • 10.05.2000 Global IPv6 Summit Birmingham, UK (in
conjunction with World Trace Congress / ISS 2000)
  • 22.-23.06.2000 Commercial IPv6 conference in
    London, UK
  • 27.-30.07.2000 IPv6 Panel, Tokyo, Japan
  • 29.11.-01.12.2000 Global IPv6 Summit in Madrid,
    Spain

12
Conclusions
  • Workstation implementation seems ready and stable
  • Router vendors have instable code
  • Cisco as major obstacle? (second half 2000?)
  • more engagement of ISPs needed?
  • Connectivity tests, IXPs IPv6
  • customer connectivity
  • Ready for IPv6?
  • Hardware vs. Software Each side is pointing to
the other side Why should I be ready if you are
not ready yet? (hen and egg-problem)
  • growth of IPv4-network just do it, the network
    will adapt/evolve (ISPs and users)
