History of Baseball
  • The exact origins of baseball are shrouded in
mystery and doubt, but it is thought that it
developed from the English game of rounders,
which was brought to America in the early 1600s
    by the first English settlers.
  • Different forms of the game were played in
different parts of America, but all involved

  • Hitting a pitched ball with a stick or bat and
trying to score runs. In 1846, Alexander
Cartwright wrote a set of rules that form the
basis of modern baseball. Today, baseball is the
top sport in America and is played in over 100
    countries around the world.

The playing field
  • A baseball field is made up of the infield, the
outfield, and foul territory. Two foul lines run
from home plate through first and third bases to
    create a 90 degree arc.
  • The infield is the inner part of the arc. A base
is placed on each corner of the infield, 90 feet
    apart, to form the diamond.
  • The outfield is the outer part of the baseball
field. It is formed by the two foul lines
    extending to an outfield fence.
