September - Workshop brought together government, academia,
and industry to identify research opportunities
in the development of a Health Promoting Foods
Research Platform at NCFST

Toxicological Research - Goal is develop research strategies that account
for genetic, environmental, and cultural
diversity that influences gene expression and
produces knowledge for improving personal and
public health

Project - 3 month summer camp for rural low-income children
in Summer of 2008 - Give children 2 nutritious meals/day

- The process has begun to update the Dietary
Guidelines (DG) for 2010. - A USDA/DHHS joint effort, USDA has the lead for
the 2010 DG - The 13-member Advisory Committee (DGAC) has been
sworn in. - The first DGAC meeting was October 30-31, 2008

- Work has been divided into eight topical
subcommittees. - The DG scientific review will be facilitated by
an Evidence-based process called the Nutrition

- The project on Biomarkers, entitled Developing
a Framework for Biomarker Validation for Reducing
the Risk of Chronic Disease, is a contract with
the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The aims are - To develop a framework on evidence-based
standards for the qualification of chronic
disease risk biomarkers - To apply available evidence on HDL-cholesterol to
this framework as a case study

- Section 912 establishes new prohibition against
food containing added drugs or biological
products - Issued FR notice on July 29 seeking comments on
section 912 to provide context for FDA decisions
implementing this provision - Received about 27 comments, now under review
- Recently also received a citizen petition citing
section 912 with respect to a specific food
ingredient
22UpdatesSalt and Sodium
- FDA Public Hearing, held on November 29, 2007, to
discuss policies regarding salt and sodium - FDA received 200 unique comments and is
presently reviewing them. - As part of an HHS-sponsored project, the IOM has
convened a committee to examine strategies to
reduce sodium intake in the U.S. population. - This committee will ultimately issue a final
report describing its recommendations.
