• Ambae lies in northern Vanuatu, an 80-island
  archipelago 2400 KM (1,400 miles) northeast of
  Sydney, Australia.
• Vanuatu, a Pacific island nation, consists of 80
  islands with a total land area of about 4,700
  square miles (12,200 square km).

• Mount Manuro, which soars 4,920 feet out of the
  South Pacific, began spewing ash and tephra on
  Nov. 27, 2005.
• It generated a plume that reached 10,000 feet on
  December 8th.

• At present, as of December 8, 2005, Mount Manuro
  is considered unlikely to explode in a
  devastating eruption.
• It is also considered unlikely to produce a
  lahar.

PREPAREDNESS

• About half of Ambae Island's 10,000 inhabitants
  have fled their huts built on Mount Manaro's
  slopes.
• four ships are anchored offshore ready to
  evacuate the rest if necessary.

• Two hospitals on the island have been emptied of
  patients, and teams of doctors and nurses are on
  standby to fly to Ambae from the capital, Port
  Vila, if a major eruption occurs.
