IN GOD, Part II
  • Why We Believe

4
Does God Exist?
5
Genesis 11 John 11 Hebrews 11 Psalms 191
141 Romans 119-20
6
Gen. 11, In the beginning GOD created heaven
and earth John 11-2, In the beginning was the
Word and the Word was with God and the Word was
God he was in the beginning with God. Heb.
11, Long ago, at many times and in many ways,
GOD spoke to our fathers by the prophets Psalm
191, the heavens declare the glory of God and
the firmament shows His handiwork. Psalm 141,
The fool says in His heart, there is no God.
Romans 119-20, For what can be known about God
is plain to them, because God has shown it to
them. For His invisible attributes, namely, His
eternal power and divine nature, have been
clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the
world, in the things that have been made. So,
they are without excuse.

Atheists say
  • Religion leads to violence (and Christianity is
    no different).
  • God is just an invention designed to console
    losers.
  • Religious faith is a leap in the dark without
    any reliable basis.
  • The natural sciences have disproved God.

8
Science Word Origin
  • Knowledge acquired by study from L. scientia,
    to know
  • Probably originally to separate one thing from
    another, to distinguish (discern).
  • Natural sciences, one of three divisions
    social (e.g., psychology) formal (e.g.,
    mathematics), natural (e.g., physics, biology,
    etc.)

9
Science as used today.
N. 1. a branch of knowledge or study dealing with
a body of facts or truths systematically
arranged and showing the operation of general
laws. 2. systematic knowledge of the physical or
material world gained through observation and
experimentation.
systematic having, showing, or involving a
system, method, or plan a systematic course of
reading systematic efforts.
The Scientific Method
10
Arrogant Science Scientism
  • Were scientists you can tell we are scientists
because we wear white coats. Science can tell us
everything we need to know about anything. You
cant know anything without us. Any scientist
worth his salt would not believe in supernatural
forces and could never believe in God.

11
Peter Atkins, Oxford chemist There is no reason
to suppose that science cannot deal with every
aspect of existence. Bertrand Russell Whatever
knowledge is attainable, must be attained by
scientific methods and what science cannot
discover, mankind cannot know. Therefore The
universe is nothing but a collection of atoms in
motion Richard Dawkins You, your joys and your
sorrows, your memories and ambitions, your sense
of personal identity and free will, are in fact
no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of
nerve cells and their associated molecules
Francis Crick, molecular biologist, co-discover
of DNA
12
Myth all scientists are atheists
  • Since 1916, polls have consistently shown that
about 40 of scientists are believers.
  • Notable scientists philosophers

13
Science and a belief in God are not inconsistent!
  • I am a scientist and a believer, and I find no
    conflict between those world views.
  • As the director of the Human Genome Project, I
have led a consortium of scientists to read out
the 3.1 billion letters of the human genome, our
own DNA instruction book. As a believer, I see
DNA, the information molecule of all living
things, as Gods language, and the elegance and
complexity of our own bodies and the rest of
nature as a reflection of Gods plan.
  • Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D.
  • Author of The Language of God A Scientist
    Presents Evidence for Belief.

14
Science has disproved God
  • Scientists critical of God, like Richard Dawkins,
abandon science when making their assertions.
  • We speak as the oracles of God (I Pet. 411).
    Secular scientist should speak scientifically
    or be quiet.
  • The scientific method cannot answer why?
    questions.

15
Its not science its a worldview
  • Our willingness to accept scientific claims that
are against common sense is the key to an
understanding of the real struggle between
science and the supernatural. We take the side of
science in spite of the patent absurdity of some
of its constructs, in spite of its failure to
fulfill many of its extravagant promises of
health and life, in spite of the tolerance of the
    scientific community for unsubstantiated just-so
stories, because we have a prior commitment, a
commitment to materialism. It is not that the
methods and institutions of science somehow
compel us to accept a material explanation of the
phenomenal world, but, on the contrary, that we
are forced by our a priori adherence to material
causes to create an apparatus of investigation
and a set of concepts that produce material
explanations, no matter how counter-intuitive, no
matter how mystifying to the uninitiated.
  • Richard Lewontin, Evolutionary Biologist,Billions
and Billions of Demons, NY Times Review of
    Books, 1997

16
Choose
Our universe is simply one of those things which
happen from time to time. E. Tryton, Is the
Universe a Vacuum Fluctuation, Nature 246
(1973). In the beginning, God created the
heavens and earth. God, who was there in the
beginning.
