Program Goals
  • To provide opportunities for interns to engage in
    observations and critical analysis of
    administrative management and leadership under
    the guidance of practicing administrative
    educators.
  • To provide opportunities for interns to develop
    attitudes, skills and knowledge about the
    application of their own management and
    leadership proficiencies.

Program Objectives
  • Develop a school profile that identifies the six
    elements consistent with the ISSLC standards.
  • Develop an understanding of the basic principles
    of school planning, including effective strategic
    planning and collaborative site-based
    decision-making.
  • Develop an understanding of resource allocation
    in the areas of money, time, and space.
  • Develop knowledge of the principles of effective
    personnel recruitment, selection, induction,
    socialization, and continuous renewal of
    educators.

  • Identify, and develop strategies that support and
    challenge the emergence of formal and informal
    leadership.
  • Develop an understanding and technical skills
    related to instructional improvement in a
    school-wide setting, as supported through teacher
    evaluation and performance improvement.
  • Develop the ability to establish effective
    interpersonal relationships with administrators,
    teachers, students, parents and supervisor, using
    effective communication techniques and strategies.

NC Principal Fellows Program Guidelines
  • A PF must perform a full-time internship during
    second year of the program.
  • The internship will be a minimum of 10 months.
  • Principal Fellows will not be placed in a vacant
    assistant principal position.
  • The PF may not be employed as assistant principal
    during the year of internship.
  • It is recommended that the intern perform the
    internship at a school level(s) where they have
    not had previous experience.

Time Frame
  • Interns will report to assigned schools for the
    fall internship on August 1, 2009.
  • They will follow the public school schedule as an
    administrator.
  • They will remain at the fall site until the last
    teacher workday in December 2009.
  • Interns will report to their assigned schools for
    the spring internship on January 4, 2010.
  • They will remain at the spring site through
    May31, 2009, despite officially graduating May 8,
    2009.

  • Interns that are employed are expected to
    complete 1000 hours of administrative duties to
    complete full-time requirements, as well as
    fulfill their job expectations.
  • All interns must complete their internships in a
    public school setting.

Program Requirements
  • Interns are expected to participate in site based
    activities for a minimum of four days per week
    during the fall semester and four days per week
    during the spring.
  • The four days can be negotiated between the
    mentoring principal, intern, and university
    supervisor.

State Stipend
  • UNCW is not responsible for the state stipend
    that each full-time/PF intern will receive during
    their year of internship.
  • The stipend amount is 14,920.00(distributed in 10
    equal payments). The stipend is sent to the
    county in which the intern is assigned.
  • This figure may not be accurate and could be
    changed by the State at anytime.
