Teacher should supply students with pattern block
shapes so they can construct the activities in
this lesson as it proceeds. As a closing
activity, students can construct pattern block
designs or tessellation. Identifying fractional
parts of designs can also be incorporated into
the final lesson project.

5- Pattern blocks can be used to teach several
different things. Some examples are - Fractional parts
- patterns
- spatial relationships
6 The blue rhombus shapes are what fractional part
of the pattern below?
2/6 or 1/3
The green triangles are what fractional part of
the pattern?
4/6 or 2/3
7This design, made of pattern blocks, can also be
used to teach fractional parts.
What fraction of the design is
yellow? A. 4/24 2/12 1/6B. 6/24 3/12
1/4C. 8/24 4/12 1/3 What fraction of the
design is green? A. 4/24 2/12 1/6B. 6/24
3/12 1/4C. 8/24 4/12 1/3
What fraction of the design is blue? A. 4/24
2/12 1/6B. 6/24 3/12 1/4C. 8/24 4/12
1/3 What fraction of the design is red? A. 4/24
2/12 1/6B. 6/24 3/12 1/4C. 8/24 4/12

8Make this shape using only two different pattern
blocks. (you may use them more than once,
however)

10The shapes below are made of two pattern block
shapes each. The blocks may be used more than
once in each shape.

Can you guess which blocks were used?

12Lets try another one!Make this one with two
shapes. Use them six times each.
13 Pattern blocks can be used to teach repeated
patterns
14 Tessellations can also be made with pattern
blocks. A dictionary will tell you that the word
"tessellate" means a repeating pattern of
interlocking shapes. A tessellation can be made
up of regular and irregular shapes. It is the
color of the shapes that makes the design a
tessellation.
15 A simple tessellation
16Below is a tessellation made with pattern blocks
