• Launch of the Umpire Development Initiative

Introduction

• IHA Umpire Development Committee (UDC)
  established in July 2005
• Umpire Development Programme (UDP) will be
  initiated
• Initial focus will be assisting clubs to develop
  umpires for appointments to club umpiring duties
• This workshop places the emphasis on developing
  the CLUB umpiring structure vs. the individual
  umpire

Mission Statement - UDC

• Promote a broad participation in umpiring, to
  increase the number of umpires at grassroots
  level and improve the standard of umpiring in
  Ireland by providing coaching and a support
  system to the umpiring fraternity

How to promote the UDP

• Involve current Branch umpires
• Develop their coaching skills to assist new
  umpires
• Create an umpiring team-spirit

• Formulate a national programme for Development
• Promote in each Branch with good support of the
  umpire Associations

• Produce material appropriate for the beginner
  level of umpire coaching
• Make it available to the clubs

• Rules engender a culture of a sound technical
  knowledge of the rules
• Consistency of rule interpretation and

  up-to-date schedule with each umpires details
• Umpire Coach (UC) Panels canvas for candidates
  in each Branch

• Review - via consensus of all the Branches - the
  Irish Grading System in terms of FIH
• Uniformity of umpire assessment throughout
  Ireland via seminars for all assessors
• Develop and promote youth in umpiring in Ireland
• Development of existing umpires and career paths
• Manual for coaches and graders
• Improve communication with all role players
