2Presentation Outline
- On Road Motorcycle Test Plan
- Objective
- Plan Overview
- Inventory Development
- Control Technology Testing
- Quality Assurance/Quality Control

- Comments and Contact Information
- Onroad Motorcycles Models to Test
- ORVR
- Control Technology Test Results
3Objective
- The current onroad evaporative test procedure
leaves a lot of uncontrolled emissions - Current model shows 12 TPD for 2025
- ARB plans to
- ARB is seeking additional reductions form this
category - Evaluate emissions from carbureted and
fuel-injected motorcycles under a more realistic
test procedure - Simplify the certification process by aligning
the on/off road motorcycles test procedure and
standard
4Plan Overview
- New emissions factors will be developed to
augment the current emissions factors - Control technology testing from OHRVs is
considered representative for onroad motorcycles
5Inventory Development
- Evaporative emissions testing will include the
following tests - Running loss test
- Hot soak test
- Diurnal test
6Inventory Development (cont.)
- Running loss tests will be conducted at 95F with
a radiant heat load of 931 W/m2 - The load profile will be a modified UDDS profile
- Hot soak will be conducted at 95F
- Diurnal emissions test will be conducted on the
EPA 72F-96F diurnal temperature profile
7Control Technology Testing
- Control technology testing for the purpose of
setting a standard will be evaluated on OHRVs - Control technologies will include
- Low permeation fuel tank and fuel line
- Carbon canister
- Fuel injection
8 Quality Assurance/Quality Control
- Testing will be conducted pursuant to 40 CFR,
Part 86, Section 86.107-90 and 96, and the
California Evaporative Emission Standards and
Test Procedures for 1978-2000 Model Motor
Vehicles - ARB will evaluate all fuels used for testing to
ensure they meet CARB and SAE specifications - SHED temperature data is collected and evaluated
on a minute by minute basis
9Next Steps for Rule Development(Tentative)
- Evaluate Emissions from Onroad Motorcycles
- Winter 2009 Summer 2009
- Control Technology Evaluation
- Current Summer 2009
- Development of Staff Proposal
- Fall 2009
- Board Hearing

10Onroad Motorcycle Test Plan Comments
11Onroad Motorcycles Models to Test
- Draft list of possible onroad motorcycles ARB
will test - ARB is soliciting industry feedback
- ARB welcomes manufacturer supplied models where
possible
12ORVR
- ARB is evaluating ORVR for Onroad motorcycles and
OHRVs - ARB is requesting industry input regarding
- Technical issues with implementing ORVR
- Timeline to be able to implement ORVR
13Control Technology Test Results
- UNCORRECTED Control Technology Test Results for
an OHRV - Running Loss 0.21 grams/23 minutes
- Hot Soak 0.37 grams/1.5 hours
- Diurnal 0.84 grams/24 hours 65-105ºF
- Tip Test Results 0 grams/test
- Total of 1.42 grams for a test cycle
- OHRV tested was a 2006 Polaris sportsman 500
EFI ATV with 4.1 gallon tank. Test fuel was E10.
Control technology included low perm. fuel
system, simulated actively purged CC, and fuel
injection. - Corrected values will be very slightly lower
