2What is symmetry?
- Symmetry means balance or form.
- In math we often talk about shapes and things
being symmetrical.
3Types of Symmetry
Line Symmetry
Rotational Symmetry
A line drawn through the middle of a shape,
where both sides would look exactly the
same.
When a shape is rotated or turned it is still the
same shape.
4History of Symmetry
- Symmetry Started with the Egyptians
- - Known as the ancient math
experts. - -They covered their walls with tile to
create designs with mirror images.
5Line Symmetry exists in nature but you may not
have noticed.
At the beach there are a variety of shells with
line symmetry.
6Under the sea there are also many symmetrical
objects such as these crabs
and
7this starfish!

If you drew a line down the center, would both
sides look exactly the same?
