to object or not to object?
  • Some verbs take no object the subject is doing
    the action.
  • However, for some verbs there must be an object
    the object is what is having the action done to
    it.

Sit vs. Set
  • Sit means to rest in a seated position or to
    be in a place.
  • Please sit here.
  • She is sitting here.
  • She sat there yesterday.
  • They have sat there before.
  • Set means to put (something) in a place. and
    needs a direct object (the something)
  • Please set the books here.
  • She is setting the books there.
  • She set the books there yesterday.
  • They have set the books there before.

Rise vs. Raise
  • Rise means to go up or to get up.
  • Please rise for the pledge.
  • He is rising for the pledge.
  • He rose for the pledge, and then said it.
  • He has risen for the pledge every day.
  • Raise means to lift (something) or to cause
    (something) to rise and take a direct object
    (the something)
  • Please raise the flag.
  • He is raising the flag.
  • He raised the flag.
  • He has raised the flag every morning.

Lie and Lay
  • Lie means to rest, to recline, or to be in a
    place.
  • The baby needs to lie down for awhile.
  • The baby is lying down.
  • The baby lay in the crib.
  • The baby has lain in the crib for an hour now.
  • Lay means to put something in a place and must
    have a direct object (i.e. the something)
  • Please lay the baby in the crib.
  • I am laying the baby down in the crib.
  • The mother laid the baby in the crib.
  • The mother had laid the baby down before it
    started crying.

to object or not to object?
  • For LIE, SIT, and RISE, there is no object the
    subject is doing the action.
  • For LAY, SET, and RAISE, there must be an object
    the object is what is having the action done to
    it.
