2Beginnings
I have always lived near the ocean.
- A field of water betrays the spirit that is in
the air. It is continually receiving new life and
motion from above. It is intermediate in its
nature between land and sky. - -Henry David Thoreau, The Writings of Henry
David Thoreau
3City of Rainbows?
- I was born in the City of Rainbows.
- AKA Prince Rupert, B.C.
4Family
I am the oldest of six children.
I have two sisters, a step-sister, a
step-brother, a half-brother, and more than a
handful of cousins.
Various family members are scattered between
Prince Rupert, Vancouver, Victoria, Winnipeg, and
Hudsons Hope, B.C.
5A Little
- In 1907 Charles Hays, president of the Grand
Trunk Pacific Railway, chose Prince Rupert as the
western terminus of Canadas second
transcontinental railroad. - Prince Rupert was to rival the port of Vancouver.
6History
- Plans were well underway until Hays returned from
a financing trip in England aboard the RMS
Titanic. - With the death of Hayes, the city became
dependent on fishing, pulp and forestry.
7City of Rain!
- In order for Prince Rupert to be the City of
Rainbows, first it must rain. - My family moved to Vancouver about 16 years ago.
- Vancouvers weather is almost dry in comparison!
8Work Experience
- I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology.
- For the last 2 years, Ive worked as the
Undergraduate Secretary for the Dept. of Earth
Ocean Sciences, UBC.
