What is a Grinder?

• Grinders can be handheld, cordless, or stationary
• Can be called abrasive wheels or tools
• Uses range from polishing, cutting, shaping
  tools, and finishing surfaces.
• Some are capable of 10,00 RPMs or 166 RPSs

• Fast spinning wheel- can grind through bone
• Dust particles
• Eye safety
• Ear safety
• Fire safety

Statistics

• In a recent year, OSHA found 1,704 violations
  related to abrasive wheel exposure adjustments,
  with 1,449 of them serious.  That was the eighth
  most frequent violation for the year.

• Mounted grinders must have a protective guard
• Must comply with ANSI

Procedures

• Have a guard on mounted grinders
• Check all grinders before use
• Angular exposure no more than 90 degrees
• Wear eye, ear, and lung protection where
  appropriate

Common Safety Tips

• Awkward places (ladders, confined spaces etc.)
• Sun protection
• Being alert
• Watch power cord if present
• Know the power of the grinderit can throw you
  back
