What is FRED?

• Four-week program designed to encourage fathers
  to read to their children on a daily basis
• during the month of November.

• The idea and the acronym F.R.E.D. were conceived
  by Dr. Lynn White, Professor and Extension Family
  Economics Specialist, with Texas Cooperative
  Extension, The Texas AM University System. The
  program content was developed by Dr. Stephen
  Green, Assistant
• Professor and Extension
• Child Development
• Specialist, also with Texas Cooperative
  Extension.

• FRED is a tribute to Fred Bourland, a Texas
  father who inspired three daughters and supported
  his wife to be accomplished professionals in
  family and consumer sciences. Dr. White recalls
  as a child how her father would read the
• newspaper to them daily.

Why Read to Children?

• Reading
• stimulates childrens imaginations
• enhances their vocabularies
• introduces them to components of stories
• provides them with information about the world

• Promotes positive parent-child interaction

An In-Depth Look at FRED

• Read 15 min/day first 2 weeks 30 min/day last 2
  weeks
• Record daily totals
• After 4 weeks, sum up daily totals
• Turn in reading log, fill out exit survey
  receive certificate
