Chinas Strategy for Plant Conservation

• China is globally important in plant diversity
  conservation
• BGCI organized a Global Leadership for Plant
  Conservation China Workshop on implementation
  of GSPC in Beijing, November 2006
• Coordinated efforts between the CAS, SFA, SEPA,
  and other organizations brought the Chinese
  Strategy for Plant Conservation, as Chinas
  response to the GSPC
• The CSPC will play an important role in
  proportionally contributing to implementation of
  GSPC
• Now, It has been published , widely distributed

Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and
Technological Advice (SBSTTA 12 meeting, Paris)

• An in-depth review of GSPC was undertaken by CBD
• The results of the review were presented at the
  12th meeting of the SBSTTA, Paris, 2-6, July, 2007

Implementation of CSPC

• To publicize CSPC for priority and funding
  sources in implementation 2008-2010
• CSPC public awareness and opportunities for its
  promotion locally, nationally and internationally
• To review gaps in ex situ collections for
  threatened tree species, in particular for
  Critically Endangered oaks, maples and magnolias
  
• Capitalize on lessons learnt in integrated
  conservation for future conservation initiatives.

• Focused Chinas strategy for plant conservation
• Coordinate efforts in 180 Chinese BG networking
• Emerging issues in plant conservation in China,
  such as monitoring climate changes in core
  eco-regions and hotspots

• The Flora of China English revision of the FRPS.
• 12 volumes published

Local Flora in China

• Up to the end of 2006, most of provinces in China
  published their own local Flora, such as Flora of
  Yunnan (21 volume), Flora of Tibet, Flora of
  Inner Mongolia.
• Flora of Hong Kong,

Botanical Gardens

• ca. 20,000 plant species are ex situ conserved in
  Botanical Gardens of CAS
• DNA banks established in SCBG, WBG, KIB.
• More than10,000 accessions are maintained in
  Wuhan Botanical Garden
• Field exploration and germplasm collection
  conducted for Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, NE China,
  Qinling Mt etc.

The Seed Bank of Wild Species in SW China

• Operating at Kunming Institute of Botany at Jan.
  2007
• Aimed at collection of 19,000 species and 190,000
  accessions, including seeds, in vitro
  cultivation, and DNA banking

In situ Conservation, Natural Reserves

• Natural Reserves in China is about 15 of the
  territory
• Play important role of plant conservation and
  integrated conservation
• In the meantime, germplasm evaluation and
  genotype and gene discovery are underway to
  contribute agriculture, forestry, environment
  restoration and health care
