PROJECT STATUS
BACKGROUND
  • Processes of care for in-hospital cardiac arrest
    are often suboptimal
  • Current incidence and management practices of
in-hospital cardiac arrest within the VA are
    unknown
  • Completed
  • Data elements and definitions
  • Screenshots and module layouts
  • Revisions under guidance of VA national
    leadership and resuscitation experts
  • Identification of alpha-test site and programming
    needs
  • Next Steps
  • Programming of computer module
  • Alpha testing and revision on provider feedback

Module
OBJECTIVE
  • To develop and implementation a registry of
in-hospital cardiac arrests in the VA health care
    system (CART-CPR) to provide
  • Quality improvement data to VA hospitals about
    cardiac arrests in their institution
  • Automated point-of-care progress notes for
    individual cardiac arrests
  • Pre-arrest and longitudinal data to determine
risk factors for in-hospital cardiac arrest and
the impact of therapies on survival of
    in-hospital cardiac arrest.

PLAN
  • Define data elements and definitions from current
national reporting tools developed by the
American Heart Association and in discussion with
    national resuscitation experts
  • Create computer modules to capture QI data at the
time of arrest event for CART-CPR registry and
    pre-populate point-of-care progress notes
  • Test implementation of alpha-version at VA Puget
Sound Assess complete capture (compare to
operator logs and code nurse documentation of
    events)
  • Assess data quality via comparison to handheld
    point-of-care documentation
  • Revise CART-CPR modules and test beta-version in
    several VA centers

AIM OF FINAL PRODUCT
  • A fully implemented national registry of
in-hospital cardiac arrest for continuous quality
    improvement of in-hospital resuscitation
management and research into effective preventive
    and therapeutic strategies for in-hospital
    resuscitation.

SELF ASSESSMENT
  • Valuable experience in the collaborative nature
of large scale quality improvement and research
    endeavors
  • Gained exposure to VA national leadership
    \experts in resuscitation research.
  • Appreciation for facilitators and barriers to
    successful project completion.
