How to Make a Whip Stitch
7Step 1
Stuff one of the black socks up to the ribbing
with the polyester fiber-fill.
8Step 2
Lay the stuffed black sock flat with the heel
centered and pointed up as shown. Cut through
both layers of the of the ribbing from the center
top of the sock the end of the ribbing as shown
by dotted red line. This will cut the ribbing
into two equal sides.
9Step 3
Cut the two sides in half as shown by the red
dotted line. The two pieces that have been cut
off will become the front legs.
10Step 4
Cut four rectangles out of the black felt for the
paws. Then cut four skinny triangles into the
top of the sock to make the claws.
11Step 5
Fold the ends of each leg up at the cut end, and
then placing a black felt foot in between, fold
the legs lengthwise and pin. Now stitch starting
from the outside bottom edge of one of the legs.
Stitch through all layers along the bottom edge.
Then turn and stitch lengthwise up the sides of
the legs. You may have to re-tuck the folded
edges under while you sew.
12Step 6
Cut one of the white socks below the heel, where
the ribbing starts. Now cut a slit through the
center of the white sock from about a half inch
above the heel seam to about an inch below the
toe seam.
13Step 7
Fold the heel on the white sock over so the curve
is flat. Lay the white sock on the skunks body
and pin around the outside edge. Now fold over
the edges around the slit in the white sock and
pin the edges down. Stitch down the center seam
using either a whipstitch or blanket stitch.
14Step 8
Now stitch around the outside of the white socks
in the same way as you did around the center.
15Step 9
Take a piece of black embroidery thread about 20
inches long and wrap it tightly around the sock
where you want the head to be. Tie a knot. Then
wrap the rest of the thread around the neck
except for about an inch. Wind the remaining
inch of thread around the string which was
wrapped around the neck, so that is securely in
place.
16Step 10
Now you will need the front leg pieces you cut
off in step 3 and the other two black felt paws
from step 4. For each front leg Pin the black
felt foot in between the two layers of sock as
you did in step 5, except that you dont need to
fold the bottom edge over because it is a
finished edge. You will stitch across the bottom
edge and up the side, as in step 5, and across
the top edge.
17Step 11
Pin the front legs in place on your skunk. Now
stitch the legs in place.
18Step 12
Stitch the eye buttons in place. Sew the nose
button in place. To make whiskers, use the thread
used to attach eye buttons. Make a loop on one
side of the nose and then tie a firm knot.
Repeat on the other side. When the thread has
been tied off, cut each loop in the center.
19Step 14
Cut our a small whit oval from the white felt.
This will make the stripe on the head. Cut out
two small half-circles from the black felt.
These will make the ears.
20Step 13
Slightly fold ears to add dimension, and then
stitch them in place. Sew the white stripe in
place on your skunks forehead.
21Step 15
Cut the other white sock at the beginning of the
ribbing. You will not need the bottom piece. The
top piece will become the tail.
22Step 15
Fold the bottom edges of the tail toward the
inside. Now pin the tail in place at the base of
the stripes. Stitch the tail to the body.
23Step 16
Cut a long flower petal shape out of black felt.
24Step 17
Stitch the black felt piece in the center of the
tail. Be careful to only stitch through the front
layer of sock. Now you have a finished skunk
