Required Courses
  • All 9th grade students are required to take
  • English I HP
  • Health Science (one semester)
  • Business Systems and Technology (one semester)
  • Biology HP
  • Physical Education I
  • Foreign Language
  • Math
  • Visual or Performing Arts

Foreign Language
  • 9th grade students will take a Foreign Language
    course depending on the level completed (with a C
    or better) in the 8th grade or based on teacher
    recommendation.
  • If you are a native speaker and think you can
    move up a level please pick up a handout that
    explains how and when you can test to move ahead.
    This must be done before you turn your
    registration card in.

Math
  • 9th grade students are placed in math based on
  • 8th grade math course grades,
  • examination, and/or
  • teacher recommendation at the end of the school
    year.
  • Course options include
  • Algebra I P
  • Algebra I HP
  • Plane and Solid Geometry HP
  • Algebra II P
  • Algebra II/Trig HP
  • Leave this part of your registration card blank.

Visual Performing Art
  • 9th grade students will select one of the
    following Visual or Performing Art courses
  • Choir (vocal music)
  • Concert Band (students with little or no
    experience on wind and percussion instruments)
  • Symphonic Band (students with some experience on
    wind and percussion instruments placement based
    on audition)
  • Wind Ensemble (advanced wind and percussion
    instruments placement based on audition)
  • Orchestra (students with little or no experience
    on violin, viola, cello, or bass)
  • Drawing and Painting
  • These courses are a year long.
  • 9th grade students may select the same Visual or
    Performing Art program in which they participated
    in the 8th grade or they may try a different
    program.

Important Information
  • It is important to remember that you are making a
    year-long commitment to enroll in the courses you
    indicate on your registration card. You may not
    drop a course because you change your mind or do
    not like the grade you earn first semester.
    Please make these choices carefully.
  • Please discuss your choices with your parents.
    Review this presentation with them it will be
    on our website. If you have questions, make an
    appointment to meet with your counselor.
  • The deadline for turning in registration cards is
    Friday, February 27th at 3 pm.
  • Keep track of your card we do not have enough
    to replace it.
  • If you lose your card, you can print a new copy
    from our website.

Summer School Opportunity
  • 1. Accelerated Summer School through NOCCCD/SCE
  • Courses are six weeks long you must attend the
    whole time
  • All courses at Western HS NO transportation is
    offered
  • Classes begin 6/22 and end 7/31
  • 5 days per week 8am to 125pm
  • Lab courses start at 7am
  • You will earn 10 credits and a grade for your
    transcript
  • You must register in the next level of the course
    for the fall
  • (for example, Drawing and Painting I in the
    summer Drawing and Painting II for the fall)
  • Courses for 8th graders going into 9th grade to
    consider Drawing and Painting I, Spanish I, and
    Geometry (Plane Solid)
  • If you are interested in taking a course over the
    summer for acceleration, please complete an
    application. Applications are due to Counseling
    by April 3rd NO EXCEPTIONS.
