Purpose Mission of Curriculum Committee
  • Purpose To approve new and modified curriculum
    prior to submission to the Governing Board for
    final approval.
  • Mission To provide guidance in and oversee the
    development of courses, programs curriculum
    policies to ensure that curriculum is
    academically sound comprehensive.

Rights Responsibilities of Faculty
  • California Ed Code 70902 the Academic Senate
    assumes primary responsibility for curriculum and
    professional and academic matters.
  • Title 5 Chapter 6 deals exclusively with
    Community Colleges in this chapter 55000 deals
    with curriculum and 58000 deals with
    fiscal/matriculation elements of curriculum.

So how are Dept. Chairs involved with curriculum?
  • Collaborate with discipline faculty to design,
    review or edit curriculum, both new and modified
  • Ensure that curriculum that goes to the
    Curriculum Committee is correct and includes
    consultation with full-time discipline faculty.
  • Give a sign-off on CurricUNET (twice!)
  • Collaborate with faculty from other disciplines
    as co-contributors to new or modified curriculum
  • Assist in the design implementation of new
    academic programs in their discipline
  • Collaborate with School Dean on recommended
    changes or additions to curriculum.

5 Criteria for Curriculum Development
  • Appropriateness must address the College
    mission and scope of the College
  • Need There must be a demonstrable need (eg CTE
    and/or transfer data)
  • Curriculum Standards Curriculum must be
    academically sound, maintain academic rigor and
    include critical thinking skills and SLOs (on
    addendum to curriculum)
  • Adequate Resources There must be District
    support () already in place or a written
    agreement for such support prior to approval.
  • Compliance Curriculum must meet Title 5
    regulations.

CurricUNET
  • CurricUNET (or CNET) is an online curriculum
    submittal system used at SWC.
  • CurricUNET site link, CurricUNET Flowchart
    other important curriculum committee information
    can be found on the Curriculum Committee website
    under faculty/staff
  • Note curriculum deadline September 4th, 2009 is
    deadline for prelaunch of new or modified
    curriculum. Curriculum submitted on CurricUNET
    by Sept. 4th is guaranteed review for
    articulation purposes, for inclusion in the
    catalog, approval of our Governing Board and
    final approval by the Chancellors Office, which
    allows for offering the following year.

Curriculum Approval Steps in CurricUNET
  • 6. Final Review (5 days) Dean Dept Chair, and
    Instructional Supp. Serv.
  • Launch Curriculum sent electronically to
    committee to their review
  • Agenda Curriculum is included on committee
    agenda for specific date (Brown Act)
  • Committee Action Committee meets to discuss,
    review and take action (approve, deny or table).
    Note Committee policy all curriculum with
    more than 4 changes in a meeting will be tabled.
  • Co-Chairs sign off (5 days)
  • Prelaunch Faculty originator submits curriculum
    on CNET
  • Dean/Dept Chair signoff
  • Instruc. Support Services Techicians review
    suggest changes to faculty orig.
  • Articulation, Library, Prereq/Coreq Review (10
    days)
  • Originator Response Time (in 7 days or defaults
    back to Prelaunch) Faculty incorporate
    recommended changes, corrections or omissions

  • Governing Board Final action on curriculum
    given by GB (approve/deny or table)
  • Final Processing Instructional Support Services
    follows up on curriculum to ensure proper
    routing, paperwork and reporting to the
    Chancellors Office (AKA Systems Office)
  • Important Note
  • In order for curriculum to be ready for fall
    offering, it
  • 1) must be approved by the Curriculum
    Committee,
  • 2) must follow the curriculum calendar
    deadlines,
  • 3) must obtain Governing Board Approval
    by spring and 4) must be published in college
    catalog.
