Tanka

• Japanese poem with 5 lines, 31 syllables
• Lines 1 and 3 have 5 syllables
• Lines 2, 4, and 5 have 7 syllables
• First three lines are a Haiku (5-7-5)
• All lines are unrhymed
• Usually focuses on a single image to evoke a
  strong feeling
• Often uses an extended metaphor

  (Petrarchan)
• English sonnet three quatrains (rhyming 4-line

  written in a dignified style
• Often meant to be recited or sung in public
