  • Simulation of New Weapon Systems
  • Embedded Simulation
  • Present Practical Advice, Tools and Lessons
    Learned
  • Developing HLA Simulations and Converting from
    DIS
  • Applying Interoperable Simulations/Simulators
  • Capture and Share Simulation Building Blocks
  • SOMs and FOMs
  • Conceptual Models or Abstractions
  • Reusable Code and Data

3
Key Points
  • XML is gaining acceptance as a data interchange
    format for simulation data
  • SBA is a multi-faceted problem. To address it,
we need a structure to breakout its components
    and identify the enablers needed.
  • Data exchange is a key problem that SBA must
    address.
  • Multiple SAFs exist, each with their own
capabilities. Using key features of one in
another has become a common practice.

4
XML is gaining acceptance as a data interchange
format for simulation data
  • Explanation XML is a set of rules, guidelines,
and conventions for designing text formats for
data. It produces data files that are easy for
    computers to read.
  • Recommendation VWS will continue to monitor
successful uses of XML. XML could become a
standard format for interchange of certain types
of simulation data (behaviors, equipment and
    performance characteristics, etc.).

5
SBA is a multi-faceted problem
  • Explanation SBA encompasses many key elements.
To address it, it must be decomposed and the
focus must be put on the key enablers.
  • Recommendation VWS will continue to support the
SBA movement. We would like to consider a joint
study group with SAPD to investigate further what
areas of SBA SISO can help with. We will
continue this study group discussion on the VWS
    (SAPD) reflector(s).

6
Data exchange is a key problem that SBA must
address
  • Explanation MS is used today to support system
acquisition. However, many different types of
tools are used, and there are no standard formats
or data interchange mechanisms for them (i.e.
CAD, mission simulation, virtual simulator). XML
is one candidate to facilitate data transport
    between tools.
  • Recommendation VWS will continue to look for
SBA concepts in future Call for Papers. Data
exchange may be one possible topic for a SISO
    study group on SBA.

7
Multiple SAFs exist, each with their own
capabilities.
  • Explanation There are many SAF simulations
    available today (ModSAF, OneSAF Testbed,
JointSAF, etc.). Each of these simulations has
their own capabilities. Some SAF users routinely
mix good features of different SAFs to meet their
    needs.
  • Recommendation SISO should continue to invite
papers on SAF simulations to provide data on
capabilities and uses of current SAFs. The
emerging OneSAF Objective System should provide
an integrating framework for the best features of
    current SAFs.
