Title: The Virtual Solar Observatory 1 Solar Data Sets
1The Virtual Solar Observatory1 - Solar Data Sets
2What is the VSO?
- A search engine and user interface uniting 67
solar data sets that reside at several different
institutions - A way for solar physicists to easily search
multiple data sets with a single access point - An application that can be integrated into IDL
codes to locate and access data on the Internet - It is NOT an centralized data archive the data
should be located with the experts who obtained
it, and who understand its idiosyncrasies. - Access points are at GSFC, NSO, Stanford
3VSO history
- Several unsuccessful attempts to obtain funding,
1999-2001 - Finally successful in 2001 via NASA senior review
- Idea was to replace GSFC SDAC
- First release in Dec 2004 at AGU
- Continual funding from NASA to present time at
about 250k/year
4VSO contributors past present
- NASA/GSFC (Gurman, Hourcle, Dimitoglou, Hughitt)
- NSO (Suarez Sola, Wampler, Hill)
- MSU (Martens, Davey, Yoshimura)
- CfA (Martens, Davey)
- Stanford (Bogart, Tian, Spencer)
- Arcetri (Reardon)
