Title: The Virtual Solar Observatory 1 Solar Data Sets

1
The Virtual Solar Observatory1 - Solar Data Sets
2
What is the VSO?
  • A search engine and user interface uniting 67
solar data sets that reside at several different
    institutions
  • A way for solar physicists to easily search
multiple data sets with a single access point
  • An application that can be integrated into IDL
codes to locate and access data on the Internet
  • It is NOT an centralized data archive the data
should be located with the experts who obtained
it, and who understand its idiosyncrasies.
  • Access points are at GSFC, NSO, Stanford

3
VSO history
  • Several unsuccessful attempts to obtain funding,
    1999-2001
  • Finally successful in 2001 via NASA senior review
  • Idea was to replace GSFC SDAC
  • First release in Dec 2004 at AGU
  • Continual funding from NASA to present time at
    about 250k/year

4
VSO contributors past present
  • NASA/GSFC (Gurman, Hourcle, Dimitoglou, Hughitt)
  • NSO (Suarez Sola, Wampler, Hill)
  • MSU (Martens, Davey, Yoshimura)
  • CfA (Martens, Davey)
  • Stanford (Bogart, Tian, Spencer)
  • Arcetri (Reardon)
