3Thermal Panel Design
4Thermal Panel Cooling Schematic
- Cooling circuits use boil-off LN2 system
- Radiator Y/-Y circuits need to be sized for
transient testing - Fast cool-down to simulate eclipse
Cooling Zones
5Thermal Panel Electrical Heating Schematic
- Each zone shown is computer controlled
- Radiator Y and Y zones are independently
controlled, and need 4-5 kW total power per
Radiator to provide transient test heat-up
capability
Heater Zones
6Heater Power Requirements and Feedthroughs

10Thermal-Vacuum Test MGSE Concept
Upper extension beams are used for lifting LAT
into place, then removed
Radiators mounted to Test Stand in vertical
orientation
Extension beams double as support legs
LAT on Test Stand(Horizontal Configuration)
11Thermal-Vacuum Test MGSE Concept (cont.)
ACD Sink Plates on an independent support frame
Possible hydraulic assist for rotating detaches
for T-Vac
LAT on Test Stand(Horizontal Configuration)
12Thermal-Vacuum Test Mechanical Issues
- Known issues to be worked
- Trapped air volumes contamination issue
- Thermal stability of support how level will it
keep the LAT and what is requirement - Sink panel design and support 5 ACD, 3 SC, 2
Rad - Requirements list
- Leveling what is accuracy and precision needed
for heat pipes any stability reqs? - Test Stand allowed temps temperature range that
Test Stand may see - Allowed parasitic conduction and radiation
to/from Test Stand and other MGSE
13Thermal-Vacuum Test MGSE Action Item Status
- T102, T114 clearances in and around T-Vac
chamber and chamber dimensions - Chamber model delivered to SLAC and incorporated
- Clearance evaluations are in the works
- T110, T130, T137, T138 define leveling
requirements for heat pipes, any muon surveys
inclinometers needed? - No progress
- T118 MGSE temperature requirements
- Agreed to keep Test Stand in a -1020 degC
range - Still working details of heating/cooling/isolation
needed - T126 agree to structural supports of LAT in
T-Vac - Test Stand provides flight-like structural and
thermal interface for LAT - Eliminated all options using GPR
- T127 develop T-Vac STE list
- Started list of MGSE, but not complete
14Thermal Data Acquisition
15Thermal-Vacuum Test Sequence Walk-Through
- Transport to Thermal-Vacuum Chamber
- Open door of T-Vac chamber and set up temporary
trolley supports and rails. Roll out trolley
from inside T-Vac chamber - Move LAT on Test Stand in horizontal
configuration on Cart to T-Vac chamber. - Lift LAT on Test Stand and set down on trolley.
Secure on trolley and break rigging. - Move GN2 source and re-route hoses up onto
trolley. - Test Preparation
- Install EGSE crates and run outside cabling from
EGSE crates and chamber DAQ to chamber port
plates. Make connections to outer feedthroughs. - Connect internal EGSE cabling from inner
feedthroughs on port plates. - Check end-to-end continuity of all cabling and
connections through to LAT EGSE crates and
chamber DAQ. - Mount remainder of specialized test equipment
(STE), including thermal panels. - Roll trolley into mouth of T-Vac chamber.
- Plumb chiller lines from LAT manifolds through
port plate feedthroughs to external chiller.
Test. Leave off.
16Thermal-Vacuum Test Sequence Walk-Through (cont.
1)
- Test Preparation
- Connect internal EGSE cabling to LAT.
- Run LAT Aliveness test.
- Mount thermal instrumentation to LAT, MGSE, and
inside of chamber. Connect instrumentation
cabling to inner chamber port plate feedthroughs
and check. - Mount ACD-XLAT and ACD-Radiator MLI blankets.
- Wrap MGSE MLI blankets around Test Stand,
instrumentation cabling, and to patch up blanket
open regions around Radiator-Grid volume. - Run LAT LPT test.
- Dress internal plumbing and electrical lines in
preparation for rolling into chamber. - Roll LAT on Test Stand into T-Vac chamber.
- Level Test Stand to ensure that heat pipes are
within required level. - Re-check all plumbing and electrical lines in
preparation for pump-down. - Connect thermal panels to cooling source and
connect heaters to port plate feedthroughs. - Connect chamber test instrumentation to port
plate connectors on inside of chamber. - Check chamber instrumentation and
heating/cooling. - Pre-T-Vac Performance Testing
- Run LAT CPT test.
- Run LAT SVAC and Muon Survey tests.
- Turn off GN2 purge and remove purge lines from
LAT and Test Stand. - Disassemble dust tent from around LAT and remove
from chamber.
