Title: What do the following have in common?

1
What do the following have in common?
2
Xerophytes
  • Xero means dry
  • Phyte means plant
  • They are able to survive in an ecosystem with
    little or no water.
  • Plants that live under arctic conditions may have
the need for xerophytic adaptations as water is
    frozen

3
Types of xerophytes
  1. Succulent plants - they store water in their
stems or leaves. They often dont have leaves
    e.g. cactus
  2. Bulbs water is stored in bulbs. They may spend
a period of dormancy during draught conditions
    underground.
  3. Short lived annuals seeds can lie dormant until
rainfall e.g. California Poppy flower and form
seeds within 4 weeks of rainfall

4
What kind of adaptations do you think they will
have?
5
Adaptations
  • They are mostly of the epidermal layer and the
    stomata.
  • They can be split into 3 categories
  • To limit water loss
  • To maximise storage of water
  • To maximise uptake of water
  • Complete the table by placing the adaptations
    into the correct category
