21The Conference
WHY RENEWABLE ENERGY?
Sustainable energy sources are the key for
solving many modern environmental problems. Many
of them, like hydro or solar power are easy to
apply Using this kind of power would be very
preferable for obtaining sustainable energy
production structures One of the main goals of
the Baltic University Programme is to make
students from our region aware of that fact The
main purpose of this activity is to show this
issue not only to students from Baltic Sea region
but also to students from other European countries
22Scientific Program of the Conference
Students organization BEST Lodz would like to
show the situation in the Baltic region and the
activity of Baltic University not only to
students from our region, but also to those from
other European countries This might be a very
interesting comparative study how do other
European countries deal with environmental
problems how do they plan to reduce the usage of
fossile energy sources. how do different
cultures from different regions of our continent
see common problems of environmental protection.
23Scientific Program of the Conference
During the conference numerous activities will be
provided Lectures by local and invited
professors Presentations Discussions BUP day
Presentations of the BUP courses,
videoconference Visiting places - Geothermal
plant in Uniejow - Hydropower plant in
Wloclawek - Solar heated residential area in
Zgierz
Students should be encouraged to prepare for
discussions - properties of renewable energy
sources - ways of applying renewable energy
sources in different locations
24Scientific Program of the Conference
Approximately 40h of lectures, discussions
between students, field trips to different
renewable energy plants, video or audio
conferences The course will include an exam
which will allow the students to get extra ECTS
points (depending on local university)
25Scientific Program of the Conference
Multicultural atmosphere will encourage exchange
of experience. Moreover each of the students will
have different knowledge, because their studies
focus on different aspects of energies.
Participation of students from outside of the
Baltic Region, will give new and fresh ideas and
overview of the topic.
26Scientific Program of the Conference
- Proposed topics of lectures
- Introduction to renewable and non-renewable
energy systems - Environmental impact of energy systems
- Renewable Energetic Sources (General
Introduction) - Solar Thermal
- Wind Power
- Hydropower
- Biomasses
- Hydrogen Fuel Cell
- Energy carriers and storage systems
27Cultural Part
Participants will be not only studying, but also
spending good time getting to know culture and
history of Lodz and Poland as well as getting to
know each other. The plans for the social part
are very rich and diverse. We hope that the
participants will love it and we think this will
be a valuable addition to the academic part.
28Financing
BEST is non-profit organisation, so activities
are dependent on sponsors. They try to reach
companies in the field of topic of specific event
in order to obtain financial and educational
assistance. Example The "Biomedical
Engineering" course they had summer 2003 they had
had help from some companies selling medical
equipment, and lectures were given by famous
polish medicine professors This spring on our
course "Plasma - from galaxies to thin films"
they had financial and educational support from
European Space Agency and the course was
opinioned as flawless.
29Budget
30Cost Estimates
BEST does not cover travel costs
40 students 20 BUP, 20 BEST 15 days
about 170 EURO/person
Total cost
BEST will get 50 from the sponsors
BUP contribution
3400 EURO
(plus cost of videoconference)
31Cost Estimates
The Technical University will allow BEST to use
student's dormitories in order to decrease the
costs of accommodation of their guests. BEST
can also use lecture rooms without any fees in
cooperation with selected faculties and
professors for each course. Another form of
help BEST will get from our Technical University
is discount meals in the canteen for guests
during the courses.
32BALTIC UNIVERSITY AND BEST
The event is a perfect place for promotion of
Baltic University activities. The cooperation
between BUP and BEST will be for the benefit of
both organisations. For BEST it will mean
improving the educational standards and for BUP
it will mean promotion among European students.
