Academic Spin-Off Programme
9AplusB
- AplusB funds innovative, technology-oriented
spin- offs from the academic sector - AplusB is increasing the number of academic
spin- offs - AplusB is - in commission of the Austrian
Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and
Technology (bmvit) - operated by the FFG /
Dept. Structural Programmes
10Why academic spin-offs?
A
B
plus
- Academia
- Use and commercialisation
- of academic research results
- Business
- Facilitating structural change -
- NEW firms are motors for structural
change - Focus on radical innovations
Fostering Science - Industry linkages
Co-operations between spin-offs and their alma
maters are strong, permanent and
research-oriented
11The Austrian Innovation System
- Strengths
- high quality of academic output (publications in
natural science and engineering) - high innovation intensity
- Weaknesses
- structural deficiencies, dominance of old
industries, few high-tech founders - innovations concentrate on small improvements
- IPR ruling at HEI
12Strategic Goals of AplusB
- ensuring a sustainable increase in the number of
academic spin-offs - enhancing the quality of these new companies
(i.e. their technology and knowledge intensity),
as well as their likelihood to succeed - increasing the potential for spin-offs from
universities, Fachhochschule colleges and
non-university research institutions - enhancing the exploitation of research results by
business
