An Overview of Funding Optionsfor Further
Education (ages 16-19)Council of the Isles of

Option 1 Further Education College
  • This is a popular option with many of our
    students. You can choose any state funded further
    education college in England or Wales. Choices in
    the past have included
  • Truro College
  • Cornwall College (including Falmouth Marine
    School)
  • Duchy College
  • Bicton College
  • Chichester College

Option 1 Funding for FE Colleges
  • There are no school fees (this is government
    funded state education).
  • To cover the costs of accommodation and
    subsistence you can apply for a grant from the
    Learning and Skills Council (LSC) in Truro,
    currently 4042 per year. The application forms
    are sent to School in June 2006. This is not
    means tested and all Islands residents are
    eligible.
  • In addition you will automatically receive a
    termly travel grant from the Council of the Isles
    of Scilly (no need to apply, follows LSC funding)
  • Plus EMA (Means tested)/Child Benefit/Tax
    Credits( means tested)

Option 2 State Sixth Form School with boarding
accommodation
  • This is also a popular option with many of our
    students. You can choose any state funded sixth
    form school in England or Wales with boarding
    accommodation. Unfortunately there are no state
    schools with boarding accommodation in Cornwall.
    (Alternatively you can choose any state sixth
    form and make your own arrangements, privately or
    with friends and family, however support
    mechanisms would need to be considered)
  • Choices in the past have included
  • Adams in Shropshire
  • Sexeys in Somerset
  • Peter Symonds College in Winchester
  • Adams

Option 2 Funding for 6th Form Schools
  • There are no school fees (this is government
    funded state education).
  • To cover the costs of accommodation and
    subsistence you can apply for a grant from the
    Learning and Skills Council, currently 4042 per
    year. The application forms are sent to School

Option 3 Modern Apprentices/work based learning
  • There are no college fees (this is government
    funded state education).
  • You may be employed or on a small training
    allowance or not employed.
  • You will probably work through a provider such as
    Cornwall, Duchy College, Joblink or through an
    employer
  • Some examples include
  • Engineering apprentice Fire Brigade (Job Link)
  • Horticultural apprentices (Duchy College)
  • Marine Engineering Pendennis Ship Yard
  • Tresco Estate Apprentice (Cornwall College)

Option 3 Funding for Modern Apprentice/Work
Based Learning
  • On the mainland
  • To cover the costs of accommodation and
    subsistence you can apply for a grant from the
    Learning and Skills Council, currently 105 per
    week for 36 weeks.
  • In addition you will receive 6 return journeys
    for learning purposes annually from the Learning
    and Skills Council funding)
  • On the Islands
  • For Block release lodgings you will receive 105
    per week for 36 weeks
  • Max 6 learning return journeys
  • Day release Lodgings 15 per night/105 per week
    for 36 weeks plus travel 120 max per week
  • EMA if not employed from April 2006 Tax
    Credits etc

Option 4Opt out of the state system for a
Private School
  • This really is opting out of the state system and
    you will receive no LSC funding or travel grant
    from the Council of the Isles of Scilly
  • Examples include
  • Truro School
  • Clifton College
  • Eton or Harrow
  • However there are many scholarships that are
    worth considering, contact the school or college.
  • EMA available if meet means tested criteria/also
    Child benefit/tax credits

Travel grants
  • For state schools and colleges, travel grants
    calculated as follows, paid by cheque to parents
    at start of term
  • Autumn term, single student fare on Scillonian,
    return by single student fare on helicopter, plus
    2 single rail tickets with a student railcard.
  • Spring terms, return student fare on helicopter,
    plus 2 single rail tickets with a student
    railcard
  • Summer term, single student fare on helicopter,
    return by single student fare on Scillonian, plus
    2 single rail tickets with a student railcard.
