4What may influence Australian pulse supply for
export
- Grower intention.. Will they plant?
- Major market SD (indicative prices).
- Perception (comparative risk - i.e. cereal
prices/ease of management versus cost of
nitrogen/rotational benefit). - Domestic Demand (feed grain prices).
- Seasonal Conditions will it rain?
- Marketer Intention..Will they export?
- Competitive SD and production time lines.
- On costs processing, freight, currency.
- Changing import requirements.
- Domestic supply and demand.
5What happened 08/09
- With good opening rains, grower intention was for
a record crop... - Late rains failed most areas except nth NSW /
Queensland.... - Except for desi chickpeas Australian production
was decimated - Preliminary estimate is a reduction in the total
Australian crop of over 40 against 07/08
6Total down 33,450 tonnes
7Down 39,800 tonnes
Note includes new small kabuli varieties
8Total down 145,800 tonnes
9Total down 11,500 tonnes
10Down 280,900 tonnes
11Total down 145,950 tonnes
12Total down 153,300 tonnes
13Total down 19,050 tonnes
14And for the coming season?
- Already good opening rains in most areas....
- .....but it is far too early to predict what
planting acreage will be - Growers are encouraged by current prices....
- ....they are discouraged by past experience of
unpredictable weather - Planting commences in May watch our web site
for updates
15We cant change the weather but we are positive
about the future
- New national, focussed plant breeding program
PBA now in its second year. - Brings all the various plant breeding bodies
together under one joint venture partnership with
GRDC. - Longer term commercial partnerships with plant
breeders. - New grower best management practice manuals and
training programs through Pulse Australia.
16How will this influence production growthin
Australia in the next five years?
- Better varieties - faster
- Drought resistance
- Disease Resistance
- Wider adaptability
- Improved Management
- Lower Input costs
- Higher yields
- Even better quality
17- Pulse Australia thanks the following major
project supporters - Grains Research and Development Corporation
